]]>The stretch between Christmas Day and New Year’s is traditionally super busy with moviegoers and this year wasn’t an exception. Last weekend, the North American ticket sales hit $11.383 billion, surpassing the parallel week in 2016 which had a record of $11.382 billion in earnings. The domestic box office also reached a new benchmark with sales surpassing $11.383 billion for 2018 according to Comscore.
Christmas Day was a particularly good day for Aquaman, which crossed the $100 million mark after five days in theaters. The DC superhero feature starring Jason Momoa generated $22 million on Tuesday, which marks the sixth biggest Christmas Day box office hauls.
Aquaman had considerable box office competition from Disney’s Mary Poppins Returns, which pocketed $11.6 million bringing its total to $50.3m and Paramount’s Bumblebee, which finished third in the domestic box office with $8.9 million. Placing fourth is Will Ferrell and John C. Reilly’s comedy Holmes & Watson with $6. Rounding out the top five is Spider-Man: Into the Spider-Verse earning $5.5 million on Tuesday, bringing its domestic total to $73.5 million.
