]]> Doris Day, one of the biggest stars of Hollywood’s Golden Era, passed away at age 97. She starred in a series of box office hits during the ’50s and ’60s and found success as a singer and an animal activist.

The tragic news was announced in an official statement by Doris Day Animal Foundation, a non-profit that she started all the way back in 1978.

“Day had been in excellent physical health for her age, until recently contracting a serious case of pneumonia, resulting in her death.  She was surrounded by a few close friends as she passed,” read the statement.

Doris Day won our hearts with her innocent charm, happy-go-lucky nature, and angelic voice. She’s been a part of Hollywood elite for decades and made a name for herself by starring in a series of box office hits, including her Oscar-nominated turn in Pillow Talk.

Day’s singing career was also a success story, and her signature song Que Sera, Sera from Alfred Hitchcock film The Man Who Knew Too Much is still remembered fondly today.

Many Hollywood stars were devastated after learning that Day is no longer with us, and expressed their condolences on social media.

Paul remembers Doris Day: 'So sad to hear of Doris Day passing away. She was a true star in more ways than one. I had the privilege of hanging out with her on a few occasions. Visiting her in her Californian home was like going to an animal sanctuary where her many dogs were taken care of in splendid style. She had a heart of gold and was a very funny lady who I shared many laughs with. Her films like 'Calamity Jane', 'Move Over, Darling' and many others were all incredible and her acting and singing always hit the mark. I will miss her but will always remember her twinkling smile and infectious laugh as well as the many great songs and movies she gave us. God bless Doris.’ #DorisDay #PaulMcCartney
