The news that the Danish actor has been tapped to star as the titular character in the new and upcoming BBC and Netflix miniseries was announced Wednesday. The miniseries hails from Sherlock writers and producers, Steven Moffat and Mark Gatiss.

“I am thrilled to be taking on the role of Dracula, especially when the script is in the hands of the incredible talents of Steven Moffat, Mark Gatiss and the team responsible for Sherlock,” said Bang, in a statement. “I’m so excited that I get to dig in to this iconic and super-interesting character. Yes, he’s evil, but there’s also so much more to him, he’s charismatic, intelligent, witty and sexy. I realize that there’s a lot to live up to with all the amazing people that have played him over the years, but I feel so privileged, to be taking on this incredible character.”

The show will be in similar format to the hit adaptation of Sherlock, which means it will consist of three feature-length episodes, in which the infamous vampire travels from Transylvania to London and plots to wreak havoc in the British capital.

“Tall, dark and gruesome all at once,” said production company Hartswood Films and writers Steven Moffat and Mark Gatiss. “Hell has a new boss.”

The writing-producing team behind Sherlock is working on a similarly formatted series about the iconic vampire. Three 90-minute installments have been ordered, penned and created by Steven Moffat and Mark Gatiss. According to Variety, the series is set in 1897 and will revolve around the blood-drinking count from Transylvania who sets his sights on Victorian London.

BBC’s Piers Wenger said in a statement, “Steven and Mark’s ingenious vision for Dracula is as clever as it is chilling. In their talented hands, the fans will experience the power of Bram Stoker’s creation as if completely anew. We are thrilled to be collaborating with them and the brilliant team at Hartswood on yet another iconic British series.”

Larry Tanz, VP content acquisition at Netflix added, “We can’t wait to bring Steven Moffat and Mark Gatiss’ brilliant storytelling to our members around the world and we are eager to collaborate on yet another series with the BBC.”
