]]>Anatomy of a Fall was one of the main contenders for the best European film award, and it defeated tough competition in Aki Kaurismäki’s Fallen Leaves, Jonathan Glazer’s The Zone of Interest, Agnieszka Holland’s Green Border, and Matteo Garrone’s Me Captain to take this trophy home.
To make the whole thing even more impressive, Anatomy of a Fall came out victorious in all the major categories it was nominated in, including best director (Triet), best screenplay (Triet and Arthur Harari), and best actress (Sandra Hüller).
Despite its recent success on the award season circuit, Anatomy of a Fall won’t be in the running for the best international feature at the Academy Awards. It hasn’t been selected for by France at its entry, but Triet is choosing to focus on the positives after this snub.
“I think now we are so happy because fortunately the movie’s really worked. It’s overcome all these things… You know don’t do films for this… the film no longer belongs to me,” Triet told the reporters at the European Film Awards.

The list of contenders in this category also includes Justine Triet’s Anatomy of a Fall, Agnieszka Holland’s Green Border, and Matteo Garrone’s Me Captain—and they’ve all been nominated for the best European director, as well!
Fallen Leaves and The Zone of Interest also received nods for the best screenplay, along with Green Border and Anatomy of a Fall, while Me Captain missed out on this nomination, with the German drama The Teachers’ Lounge taking the fifth spot.
Fallen Leaves stars Jussi Vatanen and Alma Pöysti received acting nods for their respective performances, along with The Zone of Interest actors Christian Friedel and Sandra Hüller. Hüller will be competing against herself in the best European actress field since she’s also nominated for Anatomy of a Fall.
The 36th European Film Awards will return to Berlin, Germany on December 9, when the award ceremony is set to take place.
