Looks like the Harry Potter franchise hasn’t lost its charm, easily dominating the box office this weekend. The impressive debut, however, comes in below expectations of  $65 million to $75 million range. It is the lowest debut yet for a big-screen adaptation of the J.K. Rowling novels.

While domestically it performed below expected par, it did lead the foreign box office with a massive $191 million. “The global response has been fantastic on this film,” said Ron Sanders, Warner Bros.’ head of worldwide distribution. “Having the foreign locations featured helps.” 

According to Variety, the film has earned mediocre reviews and currently holds a 40% on Rotten Tomatoes and a B+ Cinemascore.

The Fantastic Beasts franchise takes place before the events of the Harry Potter series and will comprise five films.

In a recent interview with Collider, Deep talked about filming The Crimes of Grindelwald, which is scheduled for release on November 1st, telling the magazine that he enjoyed the experience.

“I loved it yeah,” said Deep. “I loved it because that’s really an arena where you can fly around and try different things and approach a character with a lot more…um…to take someone who is teetering on being a fascist, yeah he’s a fascist, he’s one of those, but to play him as a sensitive, concerned yet manipulative and powerful wizard. The possibilities in that world are wide open, so you can really try anything. “

Then he confirmed that Fantastic Beasts: The Crimes of Grindelwald won’t be the last time we see him as part of this Harry Potter spinoff film series.

“So it was a gas and I look forward to the next installment, which I think we start the middle of next year,” the actor added.

Johnny Depp had his first appearance as Gellert Grindelwald in 2016’s Fantastic Beasts and Where to Find Them, making a cameo towards the end of the movie. Grindelwald will have a prominent role in the upcoming sequel and is expected to be a significant presence in the rest installments as well.

Other upcoming projects by Johnny Depp include King of the Jungle, movie based on the life of antivirus software developer John McAfee, and untitled Invisible Man reboot, where he will play the titular role.

The trailer shows Newt (Eddie Redmayne) meandering through the dark side of the Wizarding world in Paris. Grindelwald (Johnny Depp) is at large and is recruiting other dark wizards so that he can take over the world.

There is excitement at every turn and it looks like the young Dumbledore will be heavily featured. As the wizarding world one more becomes divided, Newt must pick a side.

A twist in the trailer reveals that Claudia Kim’s character is, in fact, the villainous snake, Nagini. Nagini becomes Voldermort’s future companion and at the end of the franchise is revealed to be the final Horcrux. The trailer discloses, however, that she is not a snake but is most likely an animagus – a witch or wizard with the power to take on an animal form. We wonder if something happens in the upcoming Fantastic Beasts movie which causes her to become permanently stuck as a snake.

Fantastic Beasts: The Crimes of Grindelwald will arrive in cinemas November 10.

The director then added more about the young Dumbledore (played by Jude Law) in the new movie. “He’s a maverick and a rebel and he’s an inspiring teacher at Hogwarts. He’s witty and has a bit of edge. He’s not this elder statesman. He’s a really kinetic guy. And opposite Johnny Depp as Grindelwald, they make an incredible pairing.”

But this doesn’t mean that Dumbledore’s sexuality won’t be addressed in the five-part Fantastic Beasts franchise as Harry Potter creator and screenwriter J.K. Rowling said two years ago.

“I can’t tell you everything I would like to say because this is obviously a five-part story so there’s lots to unpack in that relationship,” Rowling said in a press con at the time. “You will see Dumbledore as a younger man and quite a troubled man — he wasn’t always the sage…We’ll see him at that formative period of his life. As far as his sexuality is concerned … watch this space.”

Recently, Rowling took to Twitter to respond to some fans who were upset by Yates’ comments, writing that they’re jumping to conclusions about her long-term plan for Dumbledore’s character.

“I always thought of Dumbledore as gay. Dumbledore fell in love with Grindelwald, and that added to his horror when Grindelwald showed himself to be what he was,” Rowling said during an appearance at Carnegie Hall.
