According to Entertainment Weekly, Jones will play Ellie, a journalist in London who discovers and becomes obsessed with the story behind a series of love letters outlining a star-crossed romance between Jennifer Stirling (Woodley) and Anthony O’Hare (Turner) in the 1960s.

The film is adapted for the big-screen from Jojo Moyes’ 2010 novel of the same name. 

A release date has yet to be announced, however, it is known that shooting begins in Mallorca next Monday.

The opening night gala screening will take place on November 8, and the full lineup is yet to be revealed. Director Mimi Leder is one of the first women to ever be admitted to the AFI Conservatory, so it’s quite symbolic her movie will get to open the festival.

The premiere of On the Basis of Sex will also mark the 25th anniversary of Ruth Bader Ginsburg’s appointment to the Supreme Court. Leder believes her film couldn’t come at a more important moment in history nor be shown at a more relevant place than AFI Fest. She expressed her hopes that a lot of young women will “find inspiration to realize their own unlimited potential” after seeing this biopic.

Bob Gazzale, president and CEO of the American Film Institute, said its AFI’s honor to shine a proper light upon Leder and this landmark film, starring Felicity Jones and Armie Hammer.

“AFI was founded to celebrate excellence in the art form and to ensure it for future generations, On the Basis of Sex brings these dual mandates together as one – a story essential to our times and a triumph for one of the first female directors at the AFI Conservatory,” said Gazzale.

Theory of Everything star Felicity Jones married boyfriend of three years, director Charles Guard on Saturday. 

The star-studded wedding ceremony took place at Sudeley Castle in the Cotswolds, Oxfordshire in England. The Sun reports that among the guest were A-listers like Eddie Redmayne and Tom Hanks. 

The venue is the only private castle in England to have a queen buried within its grounds, Katherine Parr, the last of Henry VIII’s six wives. 

The couple has always been notoriously private about their relationship, never confirming their engagement even after Jones was spotted with a diamond ring on the red carpet in June 2017. Their nuptials, however, were confirmed by the actress’ reps.

While promoting The Theory of Everything, Jones told The Telegraph in 2014: “I am definitely romantic and I love romantic stories — that’s why I keep making romantic movies. It’s funny how seeing a love story never gets boring because it’s the dream, isn’t it? It’s the dream to have a true connection with another human being.”
