Following recent controversy over the character of the Kwik-E-Mart owner, Apu Nahasapeemapetilon, Hank Azaria confirms that he is stepping down as the voice of the character. 

The character, which was created in 1990, has recently found itself accused of reinforcing racial stereotypes.

“All we know there is I won’t be doing the voice anymore, unless there’s some way to transition it or something,” Azaria said. “We all made the decision together,” he added, “We all agreed on it. We all feel like it’s the right thing and good about it.”

It is unclear whether the character will be dropped completely from the animated series, which is currently airing its 31st season or transition to a 2020-standards version.
