Considering the subject matter, the project won’t include Cavill, but Gunn added they had “a great meeting” with the actor to talk about a number of exciting possibilities to work together in the future.

Cavill confirmed his exit in an emotional post on social media, only a few months after announcing his return. The actor admitted it’s not the easiest to share this news, but wished Gunn and Safran the best of luck as they build a new DC universe.

“Superman is still around. Everything he stands for still exists, and the examples he sets for us are still there! My turn to wear the cape has passed, but what Superman stands for never will. It’s been a fun ride with you all, onwards and upwards,” wrote the actor.

In an official statement announcing his departure, Cavill said that his journey as Geralt of Rivia has been filled with both monsters and adventures, and he wished Hemsworth the best of luck exploring the depth of this character.

“As with the greatest of literary characters, I pass the torch with reverence for the time spent embodying Geralt and enthusiasm to see Liam’s take on this most fascinating and nuanced of men,” said Cavill.

Hemsworth described the fellow actors as “an incredible Geralt”, adding that he’s honored that he’s allowing him to take up the White Wolf’s blades for the next chapter of his adventure. He’s best known as the star of the Hunger Games franchise, and his recent credits include Isn’t It Romantic and Poker Face.

The news of Cavill’s departure comes shortly after he made a cameo as Superman in Black Adam, and announced his return to the DCU. We’ll get to watch him as Geralt of Rivia when Season 3 of The Witcher returns to Netflix next year.

Chad Stahelski, known for his work on the John Wick franchise, is serving as a director. Kerry Williamson (What Happened to Monday) will pen the script.

The original Highlander, which was released in 1986, tells the story of a centuries-old war between immortals who hunt each other in order to become more powerful. Besides Lambert, the movie also starred Sean Connery, Clancy Brown, and Roxanne Hart, among others.

While the movie wasn’t a box office or critical success, it managed to get a cult following over the years. It spanned a number of sequels, television series, and an animated film.

The plans for a remake and reboot of the franchise have been in place since 2008. Stahelski was attached to the project in 2016, having been a fan of the Highlander world since high school. In his previous interviews, he said that he wants to create “John Wick with swords” and that there is a trilogy being planned.

This exciting project will have no trouble finding viewers since it’s based on a very popular fantasy franchise. The Witcher started its life in Poland back in the ‘90s, as a series of short stories and novels by Andrzej Sapkowski.

They were later adapted into a film, a television series, video games, and graphic novels. The Witcher Saga gained a cult following in Central and Eastern Europe and the games became so popular they sold over 33 million copies worldwide.

Netflix’s upcoming series will bring this franchise to an even wider audience. Lauren Schmidt Hissrich will serve as the show-runner, and Henry Cavill was always her first choice for this role.

“He was my first meeting. I didn’t have writers or scripts yet – just a green light and a lot of passion. That was four months ago, and I’ve never forgotten the passion he brought. He IS Geralt. He always has been,” wrote  Schmidt Hissrich on Twitter.
