The adaptation of Tomi Adeyemi’s debut novel will take us to an African fantasy kingdom, where a young woman Zelie must go on a quest to reclaim the magic that was violently stolen from her people. Zelie and her brother Tzain will join forces with the king’s children Princess Amari and Prince Inan to take a stand against his brutal rule.
Thuso Mbedu (The Woman King), Amandla Stenberg (The Hate U Give), Damson Idris (Snowfall), and Tosin Cole (Supacell) will lead the young cast of this project, and they’ll be joined by some of Hollywood’s biggest stars. The supporting cast will include Viola Davis (Fences), Cynthia Erivo (Wicked), Idris Elba (Beasts of No Nation), Lashana Lynch (No Time to Die), and Chiwetel Ejiofor (12 Years a Slave).
Gina Prince-Bythewood (The Woman King) will be in charge of directing this project, and she can’t wait to share Adeyemi’s tale with the world.
“I am so honored and excited to bring Tomi’s Children of Blood and Bone and the vibrant world of Orisha to life. Our incredible ensemble reflects the whole of the diaspora. This is where our magic lies,” she said in a statement.
]]>Mattel launched the Masters of the Universe line of action figures in 1982, and its success later inspired several animated series, films, video games, and more. Following the success of Barbie, it was just a matter of time before one of Mattel’s properties got the Hollywood treatment, and their live-action Masters of the Universe is showing the most promise so far.
This adaptation hails from director Travis Knight and writer Chris Butler, with Todd Black, Jason Blumenthal, Robbie Brenner, and Steve Tisch serving as producers. Nicholas Galitzine will lead its cast as He-Man, and he’ll be joined by Alison Brie as Evil-Lyn and Camila Mendes as Teela.
Idris Elba is the latest major star to board this project in the role of Duncan, Man-At-Arms, who’s been serving as weapons master and combat instructor to the royal family for centuries. He most recently voiced Knuckles in the Sonic the Hedgehog spin-off series Knuckles and will soon return in the third film in this animated franchise. He’ll next be seen in the action comedy Heads of State and the survival thriller Above the Below, which he co-directed.
]]>Elba played Charlie, a struggling DJ and bachelor, who starts nannying for the daughter of his childhood best friend, Gabby (Frankie Hervey), who’s become much more successful than him. Also starring in the series were Piper Perabo and JJ Feild.
Netflix said in a statement, “Turn Up Charlie will not return for a second season. We’re especially grateful to star and executive producer Idris Elba, who turned his passion for DJing into a witty, heart-warming comedy series. We’re also thankful to executive producers Gary Reich and Tristram Shapeero and co-executive producers Martin Joyce and Ana Garanito, along with the dedicated cast and crew, for bringing this story to life on Netflix. We look forward to continuing our relationship with Idris on future projects.”
]]>The live-action feature based on David Peterson’s Mouse Guard series is described as Game of Thrones with mice. The series, created, penned and illustrated by Peterson, tells the story of a brotherhood of mice sworn to serve their fellow mice in a medieval world.
Should he join the production, Elba will star opposite Andy Serkis and Thomas Brodie-Sangster who are already on the call sheet. According to The Hollywood Reporter, Elba is in final negotiations to star as legendary champion Celanawe, “an Obi-Wan Kenobi-like figure who was once a legendary champion and now thought long gone.” Serkis is set to portray the villainous blacksmith Midnight and Brodie-Sangster will play Lieam, one of the Mouse Guard’s youngest members, who must prove his bravery.
Set to direct Fox’s adaptation of the Boom! Studios comic is Wes Ball (Maze Runner).
Production is expected to begin late May.
]]>Most people know Elba as an actor, but he also happens to be a pretty successful DJ, who’s set to appear at Coachella in 2019. This isn’t the only project where we’ll get to see him exploring his passion for music – Elba will play a struggling DJ in the upcoming Netflix series Turn Up Charlie.
His background in the music industry isn’t the only reason we’re psyched about his possible collaboration with Swift. They’ll both appear in the upcoming big-screen remake of Cats, and having them work on a song together would be the icing on the cake.
“This year’s been amazing, because I get to play and make music a lot more and I’m hoping that… I might get Taylor and I to do a song. I mean, that would be great. We’re cool, you know? She’s a good girl, she’s a great artist. She’s got a really good heart and she works hard,” said Idris Elba.
]]>Elba’s victory was a long time coming and every time People announced the new bearer of this title, his fans felt their favorite actor deserved it more. They’ll have nothing to complain this time around since this Golden Globe winner scored this victory fair and square.
Idris Elba rose to prominence during the early 2000s thanks to the role on HBO’s hit series The Wire. He established himself as leading man with the role on Luther, starred in several Marvel blockbusters and scored Golden Globe for his commanding performance Beasts of No Nation. Despite all these and many other accomplishments, his latest definitely took him by surprise.
“I was like, ‘Come on, no way. Really?’ Looked in the mirror, I checked myself out. I was like, ‘Yeah, you are kind of sexy today.’ But to be honest, it was just a nice feeling. It was a nice surprise — an ego boost for sure,” said the actor in his cover story for People.
]]>The highly anticipated adaptation of the mega-hit musical from Andrew Lloyd Webber will be directed by Tom Hooper. This Oscar-winning filmmaker already did an amazing job turning Les Misérables into a movie, so we’re pretty confident he’ll be able to do the same with Cats.
Another reason why this adaptation is destined for greatness? It’s amazing, multi-talented cast! Long before Idris Elba jumped on board, Taylor Swift, Ian McKellen, James Corden, and Jennifer Hudson already accepted Hooper’s invitation to join the cast.
The star of Luther will reportedly play mischievous cat Macavity. He’s a criminal mastermind who serves as the antagonist of the central characters, a tribe of fellow cats called the Jellicles. Filming should start later this year and it will premiere on December 20, 2019.
]]>E! News reports that Bond casting rumors were reignited this week after The Daily Star reported that Antoine Fuqua has spoken to a Bond producer saying it’s time for an ethnic minority actor to play the lead. The report added that the director suggested Elba.
It didn’t stop there. On Sunday, Elba taunted fans, hinting that he might succeed Daniel Craig in the 007 franchise. The 45-year-old British actor took to Twitter, first posting a cryptic selfie captioned with, “my name’s Elba, Idris Elba,” an unmistakable reference to the iconic Bond line.
This of course kick started the rumor mill into even high gear, however, much to fans’ disappointment, he later tweeted, “Don’t believe the HYPE” next to an image of the rap group Public Enemy.
According to E! News, Elba said in 2014 that if the role was offered to him, he would gladly accept. If this is to happen, it would mean that Elba would be the first ever black actor to step into the suave spy shoes. However, the actor did address the fact that traditionally Bond is a white Scott telling NPR in 2011, “I just don’t want to be called the first black James Bond. Do you understand what I’m saying? Sean Connery wasn’t the Scottish James Bond and Daniel Craig wasn’t the blue-eyed James Bond. So if I played him, I don’t want to be called the black James Bond.”
