Trophies were handed out at the latest Independent Spirit Awards just ahead of the Oscars, and If Beale Street Could Talk came out swinging. The moving drama won several major awards, including the biggest honor of the night – best feature.

Barry Jenkins, who helmed this adaptation of James Baldwin’s classic novel, walked away with the best director award. Regina King collected a trophy for the best-supporting actress after a huge awards sweep at several major ceremonies that made her the Oscar favorite.

Jenkins used his acceptance speech to thank all the women who worked on this project, and who forced him to check his directorial ego and learn that he could not make a movie about women without women’s voices at the forefront. He also made a vow that each project he produces in the future will be “50% women”.

Alfonso Cuarón gave us one of the most powerfully personal stories of his career with Roma, and Online Film Critics recognized his efforts. This black and white, semi-autobiographical drama took home four awards at this ceremony.

In addition the best picture, Roma also walked away with honors in additional three categories – best director, best cinematography and best non-English speaking film. It was closely followed by the adaptation to James Baldwin’s classic If Beale Street Could Talk, which received a total of three awards.

The list of honorees features several Oscar hopefuls, but the online film critics made a couple of pretty unconventional and refreshing choices. Film Independent just released the full list of nominees for the latest edition of the Indie Spirit Awards – and it’s their most diverse group to date. We the Animals led the way with five nominations, thanks to nods in several technical categories, but failed to score one for the best feature.

Critically acclaimed dramas Eighth Grade, First Reformed and You Were Never Really Here received four nominations each. They’ll compete against If Beale Street Could Talk and Leave No Trace for the coveted best feature award.

Acting nods went to several Oscar contenders, including Regina King (Beale Street), Richard E. Grant (Can You Ever Forgive Me?) and Adam Driver (BlacKkKlansman) and a couple of more long shots. Many of the Oscar-contending films do not qualify for the Spirit Awards, but this ceremony has been a very good indicator of Academy Award success in the past.

The Independent Spirit Awards will air on February 23, 2019, with Nick Kroll and John Mulaney taking on hosting duty for the third time.
