Abbott Elementary’s Quinta Brunson, The Rehearsal, and Pachinko were also among the winners.

The acting categories brought many amazing wins our way, with Simon Rex (Red Rocket) and Taylour Paige (Zola) being crowned as the best male and female leads. Troy Kotsur (CODA) and Ruth Negga (Passing) dominated the supporting acting categories.
The Independent Spirit Awards also honored television shows for the second time, after introducing several new categories last year. Reservation Dogs was the biggest winner in the TV field, winning awards for the best new scripted series and the best ensemble cast.
The Santa Monica Pier served as the venue for this year’s Independent Spirit Awards on March 6th, while Megan Mullally and Nick Offerman hosted the ceremony.

]]>Plaza is taking on hosting duties from Nick Kroll and John Mulaney, who have been roasting A-list stars at this ceremony for two years straight. Film Independent president Josh Welsh explained it was immediately clear to them she’s the perfect person for the job.
“This year we said, let’s find someone funny, smart, a cinephile, being a great actor wouldn’t hurt, and it would be an added bonus if they’ve previously won a Spirit Award. Then we realized, oh wait, that’s Aubrey Plaza!” explained Welsh.
Plaza rose to prominence as one of the cast members of NBC sitcom Parks and Recreation, and starred in several critically acclaimed indies after the show wrapped up. She won a Spirit Award as a producer of Ingrid Goes West, and also played the lead in this quirky dramedy opposite Elizabeth Olsen.

]]>Critically acclaimed dramas Eighth Grade, First Reformed and You Were Never Really Here received four nominations each. They’ll compete against If Beale Street Could Talk and Leave No Trace for the coveted best feature award.
Acting nods went to several Oscar contenders, including Regina King (Beale Street), Richard E. Grant (Can You Ever Forgive Me?) and Adam Driver (BlacKkKlansman) and a couple of more long shots. Many of the Oscar-contending films do not qualify for the Spirit Awards, but this ceremony has been a very good indicator of Academy Award success in the past.
The Independent Spirit Awards will air on February 23, 2019, with Nick Kroll and John Mulaney taking on hosting duty for the third time.

]]>May December is one of the main contenders for the best feature award, and its stars Natalie Portman and Charles Melton received nods for the best lead and supporting role, respectively. Todd Haynes is in the running for the best director trophy, while Samy Burch received a nod for the best first screenplay.
After winning TIFF’s People’s Choice Award, American Fiction will also be competing for the best feature trophy at the Indie Spirit Awards. It’s also in the running in three more categories: best lead performance (Jeffrey Wright), best supporting performance (Erika Alexander and Sterling K. Brown), and best screenplay (Cord Jefferson).
Past Lives also scored the best feature nod, alongside All of Us Strangers, We Grown Now, and Passages. Its leading duo Greta Lee and Teo Yoo both received nods for the best lead performance, while Celine Song is nominated for two awards as the film’s writer and director.
I’m a Virgo topped the list of nominees in the television categories, along with the HBO drama The Last of Us with four nods each. Boots Riley’s Amazon comedy is competing for the best new scripted series award, along with Beef, Dreaming Whilst Black, Jury Duty, and Slip.
The 39th Independent Spirit Awards will return to the Santa Monica Pier on February 25, 2024. They’ll be streamed live on YouTube, with Joel Kim Booster and Natalie Morales serving as hosts.

Michelle Yeoh, Ke Huy Quan, and Stephanie Hsu all picked up awards for their respective performances, while Daniel Kwan and Daniel Scheinert won two awards for writing and directing the film. Paul Rogers brought its total to seven trophies, with the win for best editing.
When it comes to the television side of the aisle, The Bear dominated the night with two awards. It won the trophy for the best new scripted series, while its star Ayo Edebiri was named the best supporting performer in a new scripted series. Abbott Elementary’s Quinta Brunson, The Rehearsal, and Pachinko were also among the winners.
The 38th Independent Spirit Awards were held on March 4 at the Santa Monica Pier, California, with Hasan Minhaj hosting the show, which was streamed live on YouTube.

Sound of Metal was also amongst the major winners with a total of three trophies—best male lead (Riz Ahmed), best supporting male (Paul Raci), and best first feature (Darius Marder).
