]]>The premium cabler has tapped Jean-Marc Vallée to direct, who is the director/executive producer behind HBO’s Big Little Lies and Sharp Objects. The series hails from Vallée’s crazyrose, Channing Tatum’s Free Association and Marc Turtletaub and Peter Saraf’s Big Beach.
Gorilla And The Bird is based on the memoir of the same name by Zack McDermott. It is described as an inspirational tale of a mother’s unconditional love for her bipolar son, following Zack (the Gorilla) as he fights to regain his sanity after a devastating psychotic break, turning to the only person who didn’t give up on him – his mother (The Bird). Once a highly successful public defender for The Legal Aid Society of New York, Zach’s sudden illness takes him on a harrowing journey of delusions and antisocial behavior, leading to his eventual arrest and commitment to Bellevue Hospital.
Gorilla And The Bird is penned by Bryan Sipe who worked with Vallée on the 2015 feature Demolition starring Jake Gyllenhaal.

]]>Jean-Marc Vallée, who took a break from movie projects to focus on his work on HBO shows Big Little Lies and Sharp Objects, will make his big screen comeback with this film. In addition to directing, the two-time Emmy winner will also be in charge of rewriting the screenplay alongside Anthony McCarten, whose credits include The Theory of Everything and Darkest Hour.
The spec script focuses on Lennon and Ono’s love story alongside themes of love, courage, activism, and peace. Producer Josh Bratman was the one who managed to win over Yoko Ono and convince her to bring the story of her relationship with The Beatles co-founder to the big screen. Vallée agreed to join the project after meeting up with Ono, who connected with the artistry of his work and vision of a love story for the ages right away.

]]>During a recent chat with The Hollywood Reporter, Valle said that he needs to recharge his batteries after filming 180 days in the past 20 months.
“I burnt myself out. I’m so tired. I’m on a break, have been for a month, and I have seven more to go. I’m taking eight months to recharge my batteries and to get my life back,” – he told THR. “I didn’t know it would be so demanding, but it’s a marathon, a Herculean effort for a director to direct all the episodes. I shot 180 days in 20 months, Big Little Lies and then Sharp Objects. They were overlapping.”
Jean-Marc Vallee made his name in Hollywood with several critically acclaimed movies including Academy Award-nominated films 2009’s The Young Victoria and 2013’s Dallas Buyers Club. In 2017 he produced and directed all seven episodes of Big Little Lies’ season one, winning a Primetime Emmy Award for Outstanding Directing for a Limited Series, Movie, or Dramatic Special for this work. Vallee then helmed Sharp Objects and ended up receiving further critical acclaim.
After two television projects, Jean-Marc Vallee is now, however, ready to get back to television.
“After four weeks, I’ve been very good at my break. And I impress people around me, not myself. I’m not even researching my next project because I already have two in the works. I’m going back to a feature film, returning to a regular 40-day shoot. That will be great,” – Vallee explained.
