LA Live’s Regal theater held a Pfefferman family reunion in which TV matriarch Judith Light met up with her on-screen children played by Gaby Hoffman, Amy Landecker and Jay Duplass. Noticeably missing was Jeffrey Tambor who portrayed titular character, Maura Pfefferman, but was fired following allegations of harassment.

It was a happy moment for series creator Jill Soloway who exclaimed, “Whoopee!”

“It feels like a gigantic celebration, like a hot air balloon going up in the sky,” she said. She also went on to explain the decision to end the show with a musical. 

“I think because of all the chaos — and all of the ways in which our show had to re-examine who we were — having a musical gave us a new path forward, a new reason to be. This isn’t just like putting a button on the series,” she said. “It’s kind of like transitioning — twirling and flying into a new direction.”

Soloway also teased that we might get to see more of the Pfeffermans, saying, “I would love to do a sequel, a tri-quel, a Pfefferman family cruise for the Jewish high holidays, whatever! I’ll do anything.”

The teaser trailer final installment of Jill Soloway’s Amazon series finally reveals Maura Pfefferman’s (Jeffrey Tambor) fate. 

The clip, which dropped Wednesday in celebration of Pride Month, opens with the news that Maura has died. The final episode will follow the rest of the Pfefferman family as they try to come to terms with their loss. 

The cast includes all other members of the family, Shelly (Judith Light), Sarah (Amy Landecker), Josh (Jay Duplass), and Ali (Gaby Hoffmann). The Pfeffermans will be joined by favorite key players including Kathryn Hahn, Trace Lysette, Cherry Jones, Tig Notaro, Melora Hardin, and Rob Huebel.

Amazon’s official description promises “a dazzling two-hour movie musical fantasia. When the Pfeffermans face a life-changing loss, they begin a journey hilarious and melancholy, brazen and bold. As they face this new transition, they confront grief and come together to celebrate connection, joy, and transformation.”

The final send-off was directed and written by creator Soloway, and with original music by her sister and executive producer Faith Soloway.

While there’s still no premiere date for the final season of Transparent, series creator Jill Soloway has announced that the production isn’t going to end with a traditional series finale. 

During the Television Critics Association winter press tour Wednesday, Soloway confirmed that Transparent‘s swan song will be a musical finale. 

“We would never have wanted to take a special, incredible show like that and just end it unceremoniously. It was Jill’s idea to do a musical movie,” Amazon Studios chief Jennifer Salke told reporters during the executive session. “We signed off on that idea, trusting her that she would come up with something incredible. We all sat in the front row of a musical run-through of this movie where we were crying. It is really special.”

Apparently, Soloway always wanted to make a musical, and now she’s finally making it happen. 

“Right as my parent came out, the very first instinct I had before I wrote Transparent was that my sister, Faith, and I were going to make a documentary musical,” she explained to reporters. “As a family we were always doing musicals, so that was kind of the first impulse, was to use song — and in many ways, some people have said that Transparent has always been a show that wants to be a musical.”

The unconventional way to end the Amazon series is also a way to overcome Jefferey Tabor’s exit, “When everything went down last year and we lost Jeffrey Tambor, we went through so much as a family that felt like this very emotional … there are no words,” she said. “There was no way, really, to just go back to a plain old season five.”
