Amazon Studios spent millions of bucks to acquire distribution rights for Sundance hit Late Night, and judging by the first trailer – they made the right call. Mindy Kaling and Emma Thompson shine in this hilarious comedy about a ruthless talk show host, who’s trying to revitalize her career.

Thompson plays Katherine Newbury, a stubborn host whose ratings are slipping because she’s refusing to play by the rules. Her life turns upside down after new network president informs her she overstayed her welcome, and starts looking for her replacement.

With the help of a new female writer on her team, Newbury does everything in her power to become relevant again and save her career. Despite their many differences, these two women eventually manage to find common ground and work together towards the same goal.

Late Night had its premiere at the Sundance Film Festival, but the audiences around the US will have to wait until July 7 to see what the fuss is all about. Nisha Ganatra-directed comedy also stars John Lithgow, Hugh Dancy, Reid Scott, and Amy Ryan.

In 2015 David Letterman was preparing to leave the late-night scene after 33 years behind the host’s desk. Conan O’Brien was asked if he would write a tribute to his hero, that would be published by EW. Conan penned a piece about the legendary and revolutionary host who pioneer late-night television that was published just before Letterman’s final late-night sign-off.

Interestingly, readers weren’t the only ones to find Conan’s tribute touching. Apparently Letterman himself was moved by the piece, as O’Brien revealed on Stephen Colbert’s show on Friday night. He told the host of the gift Letterman sent him at the studio lot. O’Brien speculated that is was a vintage Porsche, however, as the massive truck pulled up after barely making it through the gate, he realized that he couldn’t have gotten it more wrong. In fact, Letterman gifted him a horse.

“Look at the expression on my face,” O’Brien said after Colbert showed a photo of him atop the horse. “That’s a man who doesn’t know what to do with a horse. Turns out, I look into it, you’ve got to feed them, you’ve got to board them, you’ve got to treat them humanely. Everyone I tell says, ‘It’s from David Letterman!’ Oh, and guess what the horse’s name is? Dave!”

O’Brien kept the horse for two years but with costs mounting, his wife found a rather curious solution to the problem: they donated the horse to an equine massage center.

In other words, plenty more insightful deep-dive moments into everything that’s wrong for fans to enjoy

“We are thrilled to have John Oliver as an integral part of the HBO family and to continue to share his comedic brilliance with the world,” said HBO entertainment president Casey Bloys in a statement. “His extraordinary genius for rich and intelligent commentary is second to none.”

To which Oliver replied: “First: I firmly disagree with everything Casey just said. Second: We’re very grateful to Richard Plepler, Casey and everyone at HBO for letting us continue to do whatever it is we actually do. And finally: We’d also like to thank our staff for all their hard work. We’re incredibly proud of all of you, and rather than tell you that to your face, we’d like to do it in the cold, dispassionate form of a press release.”

As far as Emmy nominations as a measure of success, Last Week Tonight is currently up for 8 Emmy nominations, including Outstanding Variety Talk Series, a category that was ruled by The Daily Show with John Stewart and The Colbert Report for many years. The show has just also won 2 Creative Arts Emmy awards including Outstanding Interactive Program and Outstanding Picture editing.

Netflix announced that the 70-year-old comedian will return to the small screen and host a six-episode, hour-long series. Letterman will do what he does best and conduct “in-depth conversations with extraordinary people.”

After stepping down as the host of The Late Show, Letterman hinted earlier this year in an interview that he might return to television after taking a break from his 33 years as a late-night host. In the same interview he added that his interests has shifted and if he returns to do comedy, he won’t be interested in replicating what he had done in the past.

Letterman has already proved to fans that he hasn’t lost his touch; when speaking of his exciting new project with Netflix he said, “… if you retire to spend more time with your family, check with your family first.”
