Lil Nas X gave us one of the biggest bops of 2021 with “Montero (Call Me by Your Name)”, and he’s back at it again with his latest single. “Sun Goes Down” is his most personal song to date, and its music video sees him reliving the ups and downs of his high school years.

The emotional video for this song shows the Grammy-winning rapper serving as a guardian angel to his younger self. As the video unravels, he’s revisiting some of the formative experiences from his teenage years, when he struggled to fit in and had to hide who he really is.

The 22-year-old hitmaker called “Sun Goes Down” his most vulnerable song, and explained how it chronicles his upbringing while discussing it with People. “And the video goes back to my past, to 2017 Lil Nas X in his prime. Like he was at prom, working at Taco Bell, and what he did in his room, praying his sexuality away. Like all these things that I experienced that I wanted to share with my fans,” he explained.

“Sun Goes Down” is expected to be featured on rapper’s debut studio album Montero, set to be released later this year.
