Hulu has finally unveiled the first full trailer for its adaption of Celeste Ng’s 2017 bestseller Friday.

The series was created by Liz Tigelaar and stars Reese Witherspoon and Kerry Washington. The duo is also executive producers on the show. 

“We had been looking for a project to do with Kerry for a long time,” Witherspoon said at the Television Critics Association presentation on Friday. “When I read the book, it just had so many themes that were very complex and I knew whoever was going to be my partner… who was going to show up to do the work because it’s a lot of work. The first person who I thought was perfect was Kerry. She deepens the conversation and I knew I wanted to go on this journey with her. It just made sense that we were representing completely different kinds of women and different kinds of mothering but both with dignity and respect.”

“Adding the layer of race to that really enriches the storytelling,” Washington added. “The book also deals with race and does a great job of stepping away from the binary idea of race.”

Little Fires Everywhere debuts March 18 on Hulu.

The limited series is based on Celeste Ng’s bestselling book of the same name. Developed and written by Liz Tigelaar, the series hails from Witherspoon’s Hello Sunshine and Washington’s Simpson Street and ABC Signature Studios.

The eight-episode series follows the intertwined fates of the picture-perfect Richardson family and an enigmatic mother (Washington) and daughter (Lexi Underwood) who upend their lives. The story explores the weight of secrets, the nature of art and identity, the ferocious pull of motherhood — and the danger in believing that following the rules can avert disaster. 

Jackson will play Bill Richardson, a Shaker Heights attorney who hails from modest means, Bill is the perfectly suited counterweight to his energetic and strong-willed wife, Elena (Witherspoon). But when Bill agrees to represent their friends in a fiery custody battle, the couple begins to fight about more than just their challenging youngest daughter, Izzy (Megan Stott).

After meeting with a number of networks and streaming platforms, Reese Witherspoon and Kerry Washington’s small-screen adaptation of Little Fires Everywhere was picked up by Hulu.

The streaming giant ordered the show straight to series. The novel by Celeste Ng was Reese’s book club’s September pick, quickly after she decided to secure the rights for adaptation through her production company, Hello Sunshine.

Witherspoon said in a statement, “With Kerry Washington, Liz Tigelaar and now Hulu, Hello Sunshine has brought together a dream lineup of creative collaborators, and we are privileged and humbled to have the opportunity to work with them to bring this important project to life.”

Washington also released a statement of her own following the news that the project found a home with Hulu.

“As producers, we at Simpson Street are so proud to be part of this team to tell this extraordinary story inspired by Celeste Ng’s phenomenal novel and we are thrilled to be embarking on this journey with Hulu. As an actress, I am floored to have the opportunity to work alongside Reese Witherspoon exploring the rich themes of this story playing these dynamic characters.”

This will be Washington’s first role following the end of ABC’s Scandal where she plays Olivia Pope. The streaming project joins Witherspoon’s other streaming project with Jennifer Aniston already in gestation for Apple.
