]]>Netflix only started streaming Maniac on September 21, but the series already earned a loyal army of fans who’d like to see more of it.
The series tells the story of two struggling strangers who meet each other during a confusing pharmaceutical trial.
Emmy winner Cary Joji Fukunaga directed all ten episodes of this limited series, but he’s not interested in coming back. Fukunaga is pretty busy these days, especially after being picked to direct the upcoming James Bond movie, but he wouldn’t mind seeing another season of Maniac, in case the showrunner Patrick Somerville decides to do it.
Somerville, however, doesn’t seem to be very keen on that idea. Ten episodes were all he needed to tell this complex story since he always imagined it as a mini-series.
“This was always planned as a limited series, and I think that’s another reason why we had the freedom to have a more hopeful ending. A lot of times on TV, you have to throw your characters into distress again near the end to buy the next season, and we don’t have to do that,” explained Somerville.

]]>Inspired by a Norwegian satire series from 2014, Maniac tells the story of two strangers caught up in a mind-bending pharmaceutical trial gone awry. If you’re watching the teaser in the hope you’ll find out more about the plot, you’re up for disappointment.
It’s just 50 seconds of Stone and Hill sitting across a table from each other, while colors change in the background. They aren’t given any lines, but the narrator at the beginning of the clip poses the question “If we began to appreciate the structure of the mind more often, could anything about us be changed if we really wanted it to be?”
Guess we’ll get the answer on September 21, when the long-awaited series debuts on Netflix. Despite the fact that the new teaser doesn’t reveal much, fans of Cary Fukunaga were on board from the get-go. Acclaimed filmmaker, whose credits include the first season of True Detective and films Beasts of No Nation and Jane Eyre, directed all 10 episodes of the upcoming binge-worthy show.
