Minecraft is currently shooting in New Zealand, with Jared Hess serving as the director. Chris Bowman and Hubbel Palmer worked on the script for this project, drawing inspiration from the complex world featured in the original game, but plot details are currently being kept under wraps.
In addition to McKinnon and Clement, the star-studded cast of Minecraft will be led by Jason Momoa (Aquaman), who also serves as one of its executive producers, and it also includes Emma Myers (Wednesday), Danielle Brooks (The Color Purple), Sebastian Eugene Hansen (Just Mercy), and Jack Black (School of Rock).
SNL star Kate McKinnon most recently starred in Greta Gerwig’s Barbie, and she’s currently in the running for a SAG Award with the rest of its cast. She’s also attached to Andrew Stanton’s sci-fi film In the Blink of an Eye.
As for Jemaine Clement, the New Zealand native and the member of the musical comedy duo Flight of the Conchords, is focusing on his work behind the camera as the creator of the hit FX comedy What We Do in the Shadows, in addition to being attached to James Cameron’s Avatar 3.

In addition to Momoa, Black, and Coolidge, Minecraft will also star Emma Myers (Wednesday), Danielle Brooks (The Color Purple), and Sebastian Eugene Hansen (Just Mercy).
Director Jared Hess recently discussed his approach to adapting this video game and said he’s just trying to avoid an “Ugly Sonic” situation because he doesn’t want to disappoint Minecraft‘s fanbase.
“Trying to adapt something that doesn’t have a story – it’s an open sandbox game… I like the challenge. There’s got to be a fun, ridiculous movie here. And there is,” he told The Salt Lake Tribune.
