We shouldn’t expect Monopoly movie anytime soon, however, since Lionsgate is taking it slow and is still to hire a writer or set a date for the beginning of filming. It also remains unclear whether the studio will go with a new story or keep the elements of the previous adaptation, which centered around a young man from Baltic Avenue (one of the game’s modest properties) on a quest to make a fortune.
Universal was the first studio to attempt to do a live-action movie adaptation of Monopoly, attaching Ridley Scott as a director with Pamela Pettler in charge of the script. The project, however, never managed to get off the ground, and Universal eventually gave up on the idea in 2012.
Hasbro didn’t give up, however, and teamed up with Lionsgate in 2015, when Andrew Niccol (The Truman Show and In Time) was brought in to write the script. While there wasn’t much progress since then, if Kevin Hart and Tim Story end up being a part of the project, we should expect things to get moving a bit faster.
