New York’s Paris Theater to stay open!

The historic Manhattan venue will officially remain open for business thanks to Netflix.

Multiple outlets confirm that the streaming giant has signed an extended lease agreement to keep the theater open, which means that the Paris Theater, Manhattan’s last single-screen movie palace is here to stay.

“After 71 years, the Paris Theatre has an enduring legacy, and remains the destination for a one-of-a-kind movie-going experience,” said Ted Sarandos, Netflix’s Chief Content Officer. “We are incredibly proud to preserve this historic New York institution so it can continue to be a cinematic home for film lovers.”

While this is very good news, we’ve learned that Netflix isn’t planning on running the theater as a normal theater but rather plans to use it for its original movies, special events, and other screenings.

The decision that four categories were not going to be shown on TV has been reversed.

The hugely unpopular decision to relegate the awards for Cinematography, Editing, Make-Up and Hairstyling and Live Action Short to commercial breaks was reversed by the Academy of Motion Picture Arts and Sciences.

The decision not to air these four categories live, but rather in edited form was followed by a major backlash from Hollywood A-listers and icons of the idustry including Brad Pitt, Russell Crowe, George Clooney, Quentin Tarantino, Guillermo del Toro and more.

“The Academy has heard the feedback from its membership regarding the Oscar presentation of four awards – Cinematography, Film Editing, Live Action Short, and Makeup and Hairstyling. All Academy Awards will be presented without edits, in our traditional format. We look forward to Oscar Sunday, February 24,” an Academy statement said.

It seems this year’s Oscars has already seen its fair share of controversy, first with Kevin Hart who stepped down as host following the discovery of controversial old tweets. Luckily now it seems that common sense has prevailed.

The 91st Academy Awards will take place at the Dolby Theatre, Los Angeles, California. The awards will be handed out by a host of stars including Emilia Clarke, Gary Oldman, Brie Larson and many more.

Founders of Aardman Animations have decided to transfer the company’s ownership to its employees.

Ownership of the multi-award-winning animation studio to its employees in order to ensure that the company retains its independence in an era of mergers and acquisitions. What this essentially means is that a majority of shares will be transferred to a trust, while senior management remains in their positions and form an executive board.

The decision was made by founders Peter Lord and David Sproxton, who founded Aardman in 1972. They explained their decision in a statement saying, “We’re not quitting yet, but we are preparing for our future. This approach, the creation of an employee trust, is the best solution we have found for keeping Aardman doing what it does best, keeping the teams in place and providing continuity for our highly creative culture. And of course, those that create value in the company will continue to benefit directly from the value they create.”

“We’ve spent so much time building this company up and being so profoundly attached to it. It’s not a business to us, it’s everything, it’s our statement to the world,” the two added. “Having done that for so many years, the last thing we wanted to do was to just flog it off to someone.”

Aardman’s best known for Shaun the Sheep and Wallace and Gromit.
