The new version of Superman will see Clark Kent trying to reconcile his Kryptonian heritage with his life on Earth. The first trailer shows him experiencing love and loss and becoming the hero in the eyes of the masses, while also making a few enemies along the way.
According to Gunn, Superman won’t be an origin story because we know enough about this character to immediately swing into action by his side.
“We just start in the middle of the action. Superman’s already existing. Lois and Clark already know each other. Lex hates Superman’s guts from the beginning, although they don’t know each other personally,” Gunn told The Wrap.
He cited Richard Donner’s 1978 classic Superman and the comic book series All-Star Superman as a major influence on his film. Gunn also added it will be tonally different from his previous projects, such as The Suicide Squad and Guardians of the Galaxy, adding it’s still humorous but more “grounded”.
In addition to Corenswet as Clark Kent/Superman, the cast of this film will also include Rachel Brosnahan, Nicholas Hoult, Edi Gathegi, Anthony Carrigan, Nathan Fillion, Isabela Merced, Skyler Gisondo, Sara Sampaio, María Gabriela de Faría, Wendell Pierce, and Alan Tudyk.
Superman will be released on July 11, 2025, as the first film of the DCU’s Chapter One: Gods and Monsters.
Nicholas Hoult is getting ready to follow in the footsteps of Gene Hackman, Kevin Spacey, and Jesse Eisenberg after being eyed as the front-runner for the Lex Luthor role. His casting is yet to be officially confirmed, and Warner Bros. only kicked off the audition process after the SAG-AFTRA strike came to a close.
Hoult would be joining a stacked cast of Superman: Legacy, which already includes David Corenswet as Superman, Rachel Brosnahan as Lois Lane, Isabela Merced as Hawkgirl, Edi Gathegi as Mister Terrific, Nathan Fillion as Guy Gardner, Anthony Carrigan as Metamorpho, and María Gabriela de Faría as The Engineer.
Despite the lengthy strikes in Hollywood throughout this year, James Gunn recently revealed that Superman: Legacy is still on track for its July 11, 2025 release date.
“Thanks to the efforts of our talented crew, who never lost faith during the longest strikes in Hollywood history, and who never let their foot off the pedal, continuing to barrel forward, creating the most amazing character and set designs I’ve seen in my entire career,” wrote Gunn on the social media platform Threads.
