Northern Exposure originally ran from 1990 to 1995 and focused on Dr. Joel Fleischman (Morrow), a New York native who is forced to live and work in a small Alaskan town. The show was hugely popular during its time on television and was a critics’ favorite earning more than 30 Emmy Awards nominations. The revival will serve as a continuation of the original story and will see Dr. Fleischman returning to Alaska “for the funeral of an old friend and reuniting with some of his former neighbors and meeting a new set of quirky characters.”
Besides Rob Morrow, the original also featured Jerry Corbin, Janine Turner, John Cullum, and Elaine Miles among cast members.
The idea for a Northern Exposure revival has been around for a few years now, with Darren Burrows, who starred as Ed Chigliak on the show, even trying to start a crowdfunding camping in order finance new episodes in 2016. Although the campaign failed to reach its goal, Burrows continued to work on the project hiring David Assael, who wrote several episodes of the original, as a writer.
