The three will now produce the big-screen musical with Spielberg as a producer.
Spielberg’s 1985 version starred Whoopi Goldberg as Celie. It earned 11 Oscar nominations, including a nom for Best Supporting Actress for Winfrey who made her acting debut. The original Broadway musical debuted in 2005 and scored 11 Tony Award nominations.
The project is still looking for a writer.
