Terzian went on to praise Redford’s achievements as a filmmaker, before adding: “Robert Redford is definitely a monument. Many of his films, in front or behind the camera, have now become classics. Rare are the careers which have had such a lasting impact on the history of cinema.”

With this award, Robert Redford will join several other high-profile actors who received honorary César including George Clooney, Michael Douglas, Penelope Cruz, Meryl Streep and Sean Penn.

Redford previously won numerous other awards including two Academy Awards – Best Director for 1980’s Ordinary People and an Academy Award for Lifetime Achievement in 2002. He also has one BAFTA Award and three Golden Globe Awards.

After starring in over 50 movies during his illustrious career, Robert Redford announced that he will retire from acting after the release of David Lowery’s biographical drama The Old Man & the Gun. This, however, Redford will walk away from filmmaking entirely, since he might still direct and produce.

The 81-year-old actor confirmed the news during an interview for Entertainment Weekly saying he’s making good on announcement to stop working two years ago, saying “Once Our Souls at Night and The Old Man & The Gun wrapped I’m going to say, ‘OK, that’s goodbye to all that,’ and then just focus on directing.”

His last job is the film The Old Man & The Gun which is scheduled to premiere next month. 

“Never say never, but I pretty well concluded that this would be it for me in terms of acting, and [I’ll] move towards retirement after this ’cause I’ve been doing it since I was 21. I thought, Well, that’s enough. And why not go out with something that’s very upbeat and positive?” Redford tells the outlet. 

Of his last character, Forrest Tucker, a career criminal in love with robbing banks and breaking out of prison, he said, “To me, that was a wonderful character to play at this point in my life. The thing that really got me about him — which I hope the film shows — is he robbed 17 banks and he got caught 17 times and went to prison 17 times. But he also escaped 17 times. So it made me wonder: I wonder if he was not averse to getting caught so he that could enjoy the real thrill of his life, which is to escape?”

The Old Man & The Gun, co-stars Casey Affleck, Danny Glover, Sissy Spacek and Tom Waits and will premiere at the Toronto International Film Festival.

Adapted from the Kent Haruf novel, the film premiered at the Venice Film Festival on Friday and will debut on Netflix in this month. The story is centered on a widow and widower who live next door to each other and fall into an unexpected romantic relationship. Their bond helps them combat their loneliness after many years of living in the same town, but having little interaction.

During a press conference at the Festival, Fonda told reporters that “[i]n Barefoot in the Park, I couldn’t keep my hands off of him. I was constantly forcing myself on him. In Our Souls at Night, the dynamic of my character to his character was somewhat similar. I just love the fact that these films bookend our careers. We played that young love just getting married and now we play old people love and old people sex. Although, In my opinion, Ritesh cut the sex scene too soon.” Fonda went on making a cheeky comment to the reporters saying that Redford “doesn’t like sex scenes,” while she lives for them, but she did also say that Redford is a great kisser, “[i]t was fun to kiss him in my 20s and then to kiss him again in my almost 80s.”

Fonda answered the reporters’ questions very candidly, speaking openly about how love changes as one gets older, “You know your body better, so you’re not afraid to ask for what you need. I think on a love and sex level, it just gets better.” As for Redford, he simply responded, “It just increases.”
