]]>Son of the South is based on Zellner’s 2008 memoir called The Wrong Side of Murder Creek: A White Southerner in the Freedom Movement. Till will play the lead character – Alabama native and grandson of a Ku Klux Klan member, who becomes a civil rights activist during the ‘60s.
Lucy Hale will portray Carol Anne, Zellner’s college girlfriend. The rest of the cast features the likes of Lex Scott Davis, Julia Ormond, Cedric the Entertainer, and Sharonne Lanie.
Son of the South will be directed by Spike Lee’s longtime editor Barry Alexander Brown, who was also in charge of writing a screenplay. This isn’t Brown’s first foray into directing – he actually made his directorial debut all the way back in 1990, with comedy Lonely in America.

]]>A new civil drama is in the works. The feature titled, Son of the South will be written by Lee and directed by long time collaborator, Brown. Lee will also serve as executive producer on the project.
The feature is based on the autobiography, The Wrong Side of Murder Creek: A White Southerner in the Freedom Movement. The 2009 Lillian Smith Book Award laureate was written by Alabama native and grandson of a Ku Klux Klan member, Bob Zellner. The 22-year-old white southerner was pulled into the center of the civil rights movement in 1961. The young Zellener was inspired by those whose paths he crossed including Rev. Martin Luther King, Jr. and Rosa Parks, as well as by the courage of local black high school students marching to protest the murder of tenant farmer Herbert Lee. He has been an activist ever since.
Lee and Brown work together dates back to Lee’s 1986 film She’s Gotta Have It. Their latest collaboration, BlacKkKlansman, is vying for six Oscar including Best Picture.
Son of the South will begin principal photography in Montgomery, Alabama, next month.
