Sony Pictures announced on Friday that Marvel-Sony’s Spider-Man Far From Home sequel would be moved from July 16, 2021, to November 5, 2021. Sony Pictures Animation’s Spider-Man: Into the Spider-Verse sequel will also be delayed six months from April 8, 2022, to October 7, 2022.

Tom Holland starred in Spider-Man: Far From Home, which was one of the most successful films of 2019, grossing $1.3 billion in box offices worldwide. The franchise began with 2017’s Spider-Man Homecoming and the untitled film will be the third in the franchise.

Spider-Man: Into the Spider-Verse was also a huge moneymaker, grossing $375 million worldwide and winning last year’s Acadamy Award for the best animated movie.

Holland’s video-game adaptation Uncharted will also be postponed, moving from October 8, 2021, to July 16, 2021.

The duo will be joining Tom Holland in the upcoming Spiderman sequel to Homecoming, which is currently filming in Europe.

Jackson will reprise his role as Nick Fury and Smulders will reprise the role of Maria Hill. Interestingly, both characters were killed by Thanos’ Infinity Stone-powered snap in a climatic Avengers: Infinity War scene. 

Jackson’s character is now confirmed to appear in at least two movies next year, Far From Home and Captain Marvel. According to Vulture, Jackson will be digitally de-aged for the 1990s set Captain Marvel and will portray Fury before the eye patch era. Fury’s participation in the sequel will be the first time Fury will share scenes with Spiderman alongside his oft comrade-in-arms, Hill. 

The feature will also see the return of Marisa Tomei as Peter’s Aunt May, Zendaya as his friend M.J., and Jacob Batalon as his best friend Ned. Playing the villain is Jake Gyllenhaal who will portray the iconic Mysterio.

Spiderman: Far From Home premieres July 5, two months after Captain Marvel, out March 8.

While an additional four writers are credited with writing Homecoming, the film’s story line most resembles the ideas of writers Jonathan Goldstein and John Francis. This isn’t the first time the duo made a high-profile movie with big stars, but they did tell Entertainment Weekly that working with such a huge budget was a whole new league, which presented an almost limitless possibility to create Peter Parker’s world. Channeling film director, producer and screenwriter John Hughes, they set out to create Parker’s world as divided to friends and villains. The added that it’s really a coming of age story of a kid who isn’t sure how to use his powers.

The writers duo revealed that due to the required high levels of secrecy, the code name for all of the film’s materials like scripts and schedules was chosen after the classic Seinfeld’s 8th season episode, Summer of George.

The writers pondered how much of a role would Peter’s influential father figure, Uncle Ben would play in the reboot. After choosing against a more direct reference, they decided that a subtle reference from Aunt May will do. There was also an idea to have Aunt May date, however this early draft idea simply didn’t make the cut, perhaps they hinted, she might get a boyfriend in the sequel.
