Kurosawa’s original film centered on a board member at a Yokohama shoe company, who finds himself at the center of an extortion plot after his chauffeur’s son is kidnapped by mistake and held for ransom. Lee’s film is described as a reinterpretation of Kurosawa’s masterpiece and it’s unclear how similar they would be.

Washington and Lee go way back and they’ve collaborated on multiple occasions in the past, most recently on Inside Man in 2006. Washington received an Oscar nomination for his leading role in Lee’s Malcolm X, in addition to starring in his films He Got Game and Mo’ Better Blues. 

High and Low will be released by A24, and they’ve developed it alongside Escape Artists and Mandalay Pictures. The film will later stream on Apple TV+, and it marks the second collaboration between A24, Apple Original Films, and Washington, following The Tragedy of Macbeth.

In addition to directing, Lee wrote the script alongside Alan Fox and he’ll executive produce the project through 40 Acres and a Mule Filmworks banner.

The media giant’s streaming service Apple TV+ has given the green light to a series inspired by its marketing campaign. 

The new series titled Dear…, which hails from Emmy Award-winner RJ Cutler will see people read letters explaining how celebrities have changed their lives, and will thus illuminate the lives of the celebs themselves. 

According to the streamer, the series takes an “inventive and cinematic approach to biographies of the most iconic figures in society today by using letters written by those whose lives have been changed through their work.”

The docuseries will feature Oprah Winfrey, Lin-Manuel Miranda, Stevie Wonder, Gloria Steinem, Spike Lee, Yara Shahidi, Aly Raisman, Misty Copeland, Big Bird and more throughout its 10-episode first season. 

Dear… is set to debut sometime in the spring.

News of the cancelation was confirmed Wednesday by a representative for the streaming giant. 

“Spike Lee is one of the greatest filmmakers of all time and we’re thrilled he brought the series She’s Gotta Have It (1986, based on his first feature film) to Netflix,” said Ted Sarandos, chief content officer at Netflix. “While this is our last season, we’re very proud that it will be on our service for years to come and excited to be working with Spike on his upcoming Netflix film Da 5 Bloods.”

The series starred DeWanda Wise as free-spirited artist Nola Darling. She was joined by Anthony Ramos, Ilfenesh Hadera, Cleo Anthony, Lyriq Bent, Margot Bingham, Chyna Layne, and Fat Joe.

A new civil drama is in the works. The feature titled, Son of the South will be written by Lee and directed by long time collaborator, Brown. Lee will also serve as executive producer on the project.

The feature is based on the autobiography, The Wrong Side of Murder Creek: A White Southerner in the Freedom Movement. The 2009 Lillian Smith Book Award laureate was written by Alabama native and grandson of a Ku Klux Klan member, Bob Zellner. The 22-year-old white southerner was pulled into the center of the civil rights movement in 1961. The young Zellener was inspired by those whose paths he crossed including Rev. Martin Luther King, Jr. and Rosa Parks, as well as by the courage of local black high school students marching to protest the murder of tenant farmer Herbert Lee. He has been an activist ever since. 

Lee and Brown work together dates back to Lee’s 1986 film She’s Gotta Have It. Their latest collaboration, BlacKkKlansman, is vying for six Oscar including Best Picture.

Son of the South will begin principal photography in Montgomery, Alabama, next month.

Mother Monster used her passionate speech to warn people of a “mental health crisis” we’re going through as a society and detailed her own personal struggles during a 23-minute long speech.

She invited representatives of SAG-AFTRA to team up with her Born This Way Foundation, and make Hollywood a better place by providing more sufficient mental health programs for its members.

“I wish there had been a system in place to protect and guide me, a system in place to empower me to say no to things I felt I had to do, a system in place to empower me to stay away from toxic work environments or working with people who were of seriously questionable character,” said Lady Gaga in her speech.

The A Star Is Born actress wasn’t the only person honored at the third annual SAG-AFTRA Foundation’s Patron of the Artists Awards. The list of recipients also included actor Harrison Ford, filmmaker Spike Lee, and DreamWorks co-founder Jeffrey Katzenberg.
