Multiple outlets confirm that UK filmmaker Tabitha Jackson is the new director of the Sundance Film Festival. Jackson, who served as director of the Sundance Institute’s documentary film program for the past six years, beat out 700 candidates for the gig.

“Tabitha is fiercely devoted to independent artists, has been a visionary member of the Sundance Institute’s leadership team for the last 6 years. Her authenticity, experience, and perspective will serve her well in leading the festival forward as a beacon for independent artists and audiences,” said festival executive director Keri Putnam.

“I founded Sundance Institute with the clear mission of celebrating and supporting independent artists,” Robert Redford said in a statement. “And the festival is the platform where we can showcase their stories. As we approach our 40th anniversary, I’m pleased to have Tabitha lead us as we move into the future and meet the next generation of artists and their stories.”

Jackson is set to succeed outgoing director John Cooper.

According to The Washington Post, Morgan Spurlock’s latest documentary will not premiere at the Sundance Film Festival as planned.

Super Size Me 2: Holy Chicken! was removed from the festival’s lineup by the remaining partners in Spurlock’s production company, Jeremy Chilnick and Matthew Galkin who said in a statement, “this is not the appropriate time for the film to premiere.”

This announcement came just days after the filmmaker posted his essay “I am part of the problem” on Twitter. Spurlock also announced that he would be stepping down from the company as a result.

YouTube Red who had bought the rights for $3.5 million after the Toronto International Film Festival, also had a change of heart and announced that it will not release the sequel.

Spurlock was also removed as executive producer for Showtime’s documentary-series The Trade as well as producer on TNT’s Who Rules the World.

Reps for Spurlock have yet to respond to requests for comment.
