The winners for television shows happened to be a three-way tie between Chernobyl, Fleabag, and Succession, which all won two awards. There were also many other exciting things that happened at the ceremony – Renée Zellweger won her first Golden Globe in 16 years for Judy, Hildur Guðnadóttir, the composer for Joker, was the first woman to win the award for best score, and Awkwafina became the first Asian-American actress to win best actress in a motion picture – musical or comedy in The Farewell.

Ricky Gervais has been confirmed as the host of the 2020 Golden Globes. 

The news was announced by the Hollywood Foreign Press Association on Tuesday morning.

The comedian will emcee the 77th Golden Globe Awards. The 2020 awards ceremony will mark his fifth time fronting the event. However, Gervais calmed the enthusiasm, adding that this time will definitely be his last.

“Once again, they’ve made me an offer I can’t refuse. But this is the very last time I’m doing this, which could make for a fun evening,” Gervais said in a statement.

“There is always palpable electricity in the room when Ricky takes the Globes stage. His return as master of ceremonies at the Golden Globes is much anticipated,” added Paul Telegdy, Chairman, NBC Entertainment. “It is sure to make for an unexpected evening. We can’t wait to see what he has up his sleeve.”

Gervais hosted the Globes in 2010-12 and then again in 2016.

The date for the first big awards show of the 2020 season has been announced by The Hollywood Foreign Press Association. The 2020 Golden Globes will air the first Sunday in January, just as they have the past two years. 

The annual award show will be produced by Dick Clark Productions in partnership with the HFPA. According to The Hollywood Reporter, the 2020 show will be the second in an eight-year deal inked between NBC and HFPA. It will mark the 25th consecutive Golden Globes telecast for NBC. 

The 2019 Golden Globes was co-hosted by Sandra Oh and Adam Samberg. The broadcast, which airs in 200 countries worldwide, logged 18.6 million viewers. Top honors went to Green Book, which also took home the Oscar for best picture. 

Nominations for the Oscars will be announced on January 13. The 92 Academy Awards have been set for February 9.
