This year’s awards season is almost over, and we’re at the point where nothing can surprise us anymore – but the list of winners at the Writers Guild Awards somehow managed to do so. Despite all odds, Eighth Grade and Can You Ever Forgive Me? managed to snag top honors at this ceremony.

Bo Burnham won the best original screenplay award with his first feature film Eighth Grade, beating the likes of several front-runners, including Green Book and Roma.

Nicole Holofcener and Jeff Whitty also managed to pull an upset in the best-adapted screenplay category, and come up victorious despite going against the writers of BlacKkKlansman and A Star Is Bor.

The winners of the TV categories proved to be much more predictable, and the top awards went to The Marvelous Mrs. Maisel (best comedy) and The Americans (best drama), while HBO’s dark comedy Barry took home the award for best new series.

Alfonso Cuarón received some of the best reviews of his career for his deeply personal family drama Roma, and his trophy shelf reflects that. He won four awards for this film at the Critics’ Choice Awards ceremony.

In addition to winning the biggest award of the night – best picture – Roma also came out victorious in additional three categories: best director, cinematography and foreign film. Black Panther and Vice also had a great night at the Critics’ Choice Awards this year and scooped three awards each.

The critics also showed a lot of love for TV shows The Americans and The Marvelous Mrs. Maisel. They both received three shiny statues by the end of the night and won the best drama and best comedy series awards, respectively.

Just like every other awards show, the Critics’ Choice Awards couldn’t go without a shocker or two. Viewers were surprised after seeing two ties in one night, but it was an absolute delight to watch Amy Adams and Patricia Arquette share the stage and accept an award together, only to be followed by Glenn Close and Lady Gaga do the same thing.

Golden Globes are the first major awards ceremony of the year, so it often brings a surprise or two – and it sure did it again this year! In a shocking turn of events, Bohemian Rhapsody took home the biggest award of the night.

The Freddie Mercury biopic was the dark horse in the race for best drama film, but it ended up beating obvious favorites like A Star Is Born. Bradley Cooper and Lady Gaga were expected to win awards for their performances in this movie, but that never happened since Rami Malek and Glenn Close bested them in their respective categories.

The comedy categories were easier to predict, and Green Book took home to the main award of the night, while Christian Bale (Vice) and Olivia Colman (The Favourite) won the acting categories

When it comes to TV, the Golden Globe voters bid farewell to The Americans by awarding the last season of this show with a shiny trophy for best drama. The Kominsky Method won big in comedy categories, while American Crime Story proved to be the best miniseries of the year.
