The final season of The Good Place arrived in two parts with the final episode landing on Friday. In the end, the series tells us more about how to live our life on earth than it does about what the afterlife could be like.

After the mid-season finale, Chidi is put in a position where he has to redesign the entire afterlife system or else humanity will be wiped out of existence for good. After a hefty philosophy session, the gang decides to create a medium place where people must take a morality test based on their time on earth. When they collect enough points, however long it takes, they are allowed to enter the real Good Place.

When the gang finally makes it into the real Good Place, they learn that everybody is bored out of their minds. They can have literally anything they want whenever they want and as a result, they experience a version of heaven paradox. Without any struggle or purpose, they are profoundly fed up. Michael then reminds Eleanor of a pearl of wisdom she gave him during his existential crisis. What makes human life meaningful is the fact that it will end.

The Good Place residents are subsequently given the option to walk through a door when they feel their time is over. The door will put an end to their existence should they feel they have gained everything they possibly can from their time in the Good Place. Sure enough, when the people learn that they have the option to leave, they are able to sit back and enjoy the party.

In the end, the afterlife that Chidi and the group create is one of peace. For a while, each member of the group enjoys the perks of getting anything they want whenever they want. As a viewer, we have no concept of how long they have been there. We never endure what would have to be billions of episodes of Chidi reading philosophy and Eleanor eating shrimp. Instead, we are shown each character at the moment they decide to walk through the door.

Inevitably, it is a tear-jerking moment when Jason becomes the first to leave the Good Place. It is a bittersweet moment. Ultimately, there is no happier ending a person can get. Jason spends as long as he wanted enjoying his time with his family and friends in paradise and then when he felt at peace, he was able to move on. Nonetheless, without billions of years to come to terms with the concept of the afterlife, we can’t help but feel sad about his journey coming to an end. This is what makes the show so poignant, profound, and beautiful.

In the end, the show says more about life on earth than it ever does about the afterlife. It teaches us about morality, purpose, and how to live our life as meaningfully as possible. It’s the mistakes and the bad days that make the good days so wonderful and when Michael finally achieves his dream of becoming human, we are given a brief reminder of how special it is to be human.

Season Four of The Good Place will be its last.

News that NBC’s critically acclaimed series is ending after its upcoming fourth season was announced Friday by series creator/executive producer Michael Schur during at the series’ panel at the Television Academy.

“After The Good Place was picked up for season two, the writing staff and I began to map out, as best we could, the trajectory of the show. Given the ideas we wanted to explore, and the pace at which we wanted to present those ideas, I began to feel like four seasons—just over 50 episodes—was the right lifespan. At times over the past few years we’ve been tempted to go beyond four seasons, but mostly because making this show is a rare, creatively fulfilling joy, and at the end of the day, we don’t want to tread water just because the water is so warm and pleasant. As such, the upcoming fourth season will be our last.”

“I will be forever grateful to NBC and Universal TV for letting us make The Good Place, and for letting us end it on our own schedule. I will also be forever grateful to the creative team, both on-screen and off, for their hard work and dedication to a very weird idea,” he said. “We ask the question very frequently, on this show, what do we owe to each other? The answer, for me, is: I owe all of you a whole lot.”

The series follows a group of humans in the afterlife. It stars Kristen Bell, Ted Danson, D’Arcy Carden, Manny Jacinto, William Jackson Harper, and Jameela Jamil. According to Deadline, the comedy averaged a 1.6 rating in adults 18-49 and 4.6 million viewers overall for its 2018-19 season.

The Good Place returns for its final season this fall on NBC.

The Good Place has been making us laugh for three glorious seasons, and it will continue doing so for at least another year. NBC renewed this quirky sitcom for Season 4 and we can’t wait to see what they’ve got in store for the Brainy Bunch.

The Good Place first premiered in 2016 and gave us one of the most ground-breaking looks at the afterlife in cinematic history. It immediately became a critical darling and gradually built a small, but extremely devoted, fanbase.

Tracey Pakosta and Lisa Katz, co-presidents of scripted programming at NBC couldn’t wait to announce amazing news, giving fans of the show the best early Christmas present ever.

“Congratulations to Mike Schur and an exceptional cast and crew, all of whom collaborate to create a thoughtful, mind-bending and hysterical series unlike anything else on television. We can’t wait to see what unexpected stories the new season will bring.”

The Good Place stars Ted Danson and Kristen Bell in lead roles, but it also served as a break-through for several series regulars, including Jameela Jamil and William Jackson Harper. Season 3 still hasn’t wrapped up, but judging by this show’s track record – we’re probably getting an amazing twist at the end.

When Veronica Mars ended in 2007, fans were insistent about bringing the iconic character back to the screens, and they succeeded, crowdsourcing a budget via Kickstarter for a Veronica Mars movie that was released in 2014.

During a Facebook Live interview on Wednesday, co-star Ryan Hansen was asked about the possibility of the series’ comeback and he got Kristen Bell on the phone to dish about playing the investigator once again.

“Rob and I are sort of in constant contact about when we could do it again,” Bell said. “There’s a lot of willingness and commitment to doing it again.”

The actress is currently starring NBC’s The Good Place, but noted that if they were to bring Veronica back, it would be some kind of TV or streaming series.

“Personally, and I think that Rob probably agrees that, A: we’ll never make the fans pay for it again, and B: the format works better in an episodic, where you get a little more of it,” she shared. “So we want to do a miniseries. We are willing to put the effort in.”

“I mean, if I have to do it as Murder, She Wrote at 80, we’re going to do it. It’s going to happen.”
