The Ballad of Songbirds & Snakes was released on November 17 and earned $100.8 million globally during its opening weekend. This was the lowest start for The Hunger Games franchise and the critical reviews were pretty mixed, but that didn’t stop this prequel from topping the box office for two weeks in a row.
After only 11 days in theatres, The Ballad of Songbirds & Snake managed to earn $200 million globally, including 100.5 million in North America alone. It’s Lionsgate’s second film to do so this year, following the success of John Wick: Chapter 4, which crossed the $200 million mark in just eight days.
The Ballad of Songbirds & Snakes takes place during the tenth annual Hunger Games and centers on the young Coriolanus Snow, who went on to become the tyrannical president of Panem. Tom Blyth and Rachel Zegler lead the film’s star-studded cast, alongside Peter Dinklage, Jason Schwartzman, Hunter Schafer, Josh Andrés Rivera, and Viola Davis.

The Ballad of Songbirds & Snakes narrowly missed the $100 million mark, failing to make back its budget and meet the box office projections, but its numbers are pretty solid. It topped the global box office with $98.5 million grossed during its opening week, including 44 million domestically and $54.5 million internationally.
This prequel also helped The Hunger Games franchise cross the $3 billion mark at the global box office, despite scoring the lowest opening weekend amongst the five films in this series.
The music video for “Can’t Catch Me Now” opens with Rodrigo playing a guitar inside an isolated cabin in the woods before she steps outside and runs for her life. The video is interspersed with scenes from the film, which centers on the young Coriolanus Snow mentoring the young tribute Lucy Gray Baird for the 10th annual Hunger Games.
Rodrigo recently attended the film’s premiere in Los Angeles and said it was an honor to write this song, especially since it allowed her to flex her songwriting abilities.
“It was a really fun challenge for me as a songwriter because lots of my songs are kind of about my personal life… It was a wonderful experience to try to write something from the character of Lucy Gray. [She’s] a character that I feel very connected to,” said Rodrigo.
