Another BAFTA ceremony is behind us, and masterminds behind The Power of the Dog and Dune had a reason to celebrate at the end of the night. Jane Campion’s wester drama picked up the award for best film, while Denis Villeneuve’s sci-fi epic walked away with a total of five awards.

The Power of the Dog was running against Belfast, Dune, Don’t Look Up, and Licorice Pizza in the best film category, but it managed to beat tough competition to pick up this trophy. Campion was named the best director, becoming the third woman to ever collect this award.

Dune came into the ceremony with high expectations, after topping the list of nominees with 11 nods. It managed to win five of these awards—best cinematography, production design, special visual effects, sound, and original score.

The acting categories brought one of the biggest surprises of the night our way, with underdog Joanna Scanlan picking up the award for best actress with After Love. The rest of the winners were easier to predict—Will Smith (King Richard) was named best actor, while Troy Kotsur (CODA) and Ariana DeBose (West Side Story) dominated supporting categories.

The 75th British Academy Film Awards took place on March 13th at the Royal Albert Hall in London, with Rebel Wilson hosting the ceremony.

After months of anticipation, the list of nominations for the Academy Awards is finally in! The Power of the Dog took a clear lead with a total of 12 nods, while its director Jane Campion set several major records with her work on this western drama.

The Power of the Dog is one of the movies in the running for the biggest award of the night—best picture. Denis Villeneuve’s Dune, which received a total of 10 nominations, is also in the running, together with Belfast and West Side Story, with seven nods each. The list of contenders in the main category also includes Don’t Look Up, CODA, Drive My Car, King Richard, Licorice Pizza, and Nightmare Alley.

This film is also in the running for four acting awards, thanks to its stars Benedict Cumberbatch, Kirsten Dunst, Jesse Plemons, and Kodi Smit-McPhee.

The 94th Academy Awards will be held on March 27th at the Dolby Theatre in Los Angeles, and we’re yet to learn who’ll be in charge of hosting it.

Elisabeth Moss and Benedict Cumberbatch will topline The Power Of The Dog.

The Handmaid’s Tale star and Avengers: Endgame’s actor will star in the forthcoming Jane Campion-helmed film adapted from Thomas Savage’s novel.

The story follows brothers Phil (Cumberbatch) and George Burbank. The two brothers are joint owners of the biggest ranch in their Montana valley. When George secretly marries local widow Rose (Moss), an angry Phil wages a relentless war to destroy her by using her son Peter as a pawn.

The Power of the Dog is a sublime novel that deserves a life on the big screen. I couldn’t stop thinking about the story, it really haunted me. The themes of masculinity, nostalgia and betrayal are an intoxicating mix,” Campion said. “It’s also rare to find a story where the themes, the plot and the characters build tension as they reveal each other and even the end is satisfying and unexpected. It will be the first time I’ve worked with a male lead, which is exciting. Phil is a charismatic and complex character who declares war on his brother’s new wife and her teenage son.”

The film is set to go into pre-production at the end of the year.

The Power of the Dog made history as the first film helmed by a female director to receive over 10 nominations. Jane Campion also became the first woman to score a second directing Oscar nomination.

The Golden Globes took place without a lot of fanfare this year, but that didn’t stop them from setting the mood for the rest of the awards season. Some of the biggest Oscars front-runners collected awards at this ceremony, including The Power of the Dog and West Side Story.

After topping the list of nominees with seven nods, The Power of the Dog managed to collect three. It won the prestigious award for the best motion picture — drama, and also netted accolades for best director (Jane Campion) and best-supporting actor (Kodi Smit-McPhee).

Steven Spielberg’s remake of West Side Story also walked away with three shiny trophies. It was crowned as the best motion picture – musical or comedy, while its rising stars Rachel Zegler and Ariana DeBose walked away with acting awards in their respective categories.

The TV field didn’t bring too many surprises our way, and HBO drama Succession was the expected winner in several categories. In addition to winning the award for best drama series, its stars Jeremy Strong and Sarah Snook were also honored in their respective categories.
