The first photo of Menzies in character was shared on the series’ official Twitter account on Tuesday. 

Menzies is taking over the role of the Duke of Edinburgh from Matt Smith who portrayed the Duke for season One and Two of the series and will play opposite a new Queen Elizabeth II, portrayed by Olivia Colman who took over the lead from Claire Foy. Helena Bonham Carter will also take over the role of Princess Margaret, from Vanessa Kirby.

As the series chronicles the life of the British royal family, production has decided on changing casts in order to truly embody the aging of the characters.

Josh O’Connor as a young Prince Charles, Marion Bailey as Elizabeth, the Queen Mother and Ben Daniels as Antony Armstrong-Jones, Princess Margaret’s husband round out the cast.

Season Three of the monarchical drama covers the period of 1964 through the early 1970s. It is currently in production and is expected to premiere in 2019.

Netflix has found its next Prince Phillip. Taking over the role of the royal from Matt Smith is Game of Thrones and Outlander alum, Tobias Menzies.

The familiar face will portray Queen Elizabeth’s husband in seasons 3 and 4 of the series. This casting announcement joins earlier confirmed casting changes. The series’ creative team’s decision to recasting Queen Elizabeth (Olivia Colman) and Princess Margaret (Helena Bonham Carter) is part of the productions preparation to make a major time jump for the next season, set well into the 1970s.

Menzies wasn’t actually the first pick for the role; the series had its eyes on Paul Bettany to join, however, due to scheduling conflicts, the deal fell through.

Back in 2016 Netflix content chief Ted Sarandos said that the series “is going to take Queen Elizabeth from age 29 to, presumably, the current day. We’ll see it layout over decades. The idea is to do this over six decades in six seasons presumably, and make the whole show over eight to 10 years.”

Producers have confirmed that the late Princess Diana will be introduced in the third season, and will be featured heavily in the fourth and as-yet-unofficial fifth seasons.
