]]>True Detective: Night Country took place in Ennis, a small Alaskan town where many secrets lie buried under the eternal ice. Detectives Liz Danvers and Evangeline Navarro (Jodie Foster and Kali Reis) must overcome their differences and work together to investigate the mysterious death of researchers working at the Tsalal Arctic Research Station.
Night Country became a huge hit for HBO, and it grew into the most-watched installment of True Detective, with 12.7 million cross-platform viewers. HBO renewed it just a few days after the Season 4 finale, and Issa López agreed to return as a showrunner, under a new overall deal that will see her creating new content for Max and HBO.
Francesca Orsi, EVP of HBO Programming, praised López’s commendable vision for Night Country, adding she inspired them with her resilience both on the page and behind the camera.
“Issa Lopez is that one-of-a-kind, rare talent that speaks directly to HBO’s creative spirit… Alongside Jodie and Kali’s impeccable performances, she’s made this installation of the franchise a massive success, we are so lucky to have her as part of our family,” said Orsi in a statement.

The duo will play detectives Liz Danvers and Evangeline Navarro, who are trying to solve the case of the disappearance of six men from Tsalal Arctic Research Station in Ennis, Alaska. In the middle of Alaska’s wastelands, they must confront the darkness they carry in themselves, and dig into the haunting truths that lie buried under the eternal ice.
True Detective: North Country will also star John Hawkes, Christopher Eccleston, Fiona Shaw, Finn Bennett, and Anna Lambe. The filming kicked off in Iceland last month and the series still doesn’t have an official release date.
The first footage from the series gave us a sneak peek of Foster and Reis in character, and it’s been featured in HBO’s sizzle reel of their upcoming programming for 2023. The video included clips from several new shows, such as The Last of Us, The Idol, and White House Plumbers, in addition to teasing the return of The Gilded Age, Succession, and Barry.
Oscar winner Mahershala Ali leads the next installment of HBO’s crime drama and takes front and center in the first teaser. He plays Wayne Hays, an Arkansas state police detective who’s trying to solve a mystery from his past that’s been haunting him for decades. Season 3 is set in Ozark and centers on a terrible crime that unravels over three separate time periods.
Judging by the teaser alone, True Detective is going back to the gritty atmosphere it established in Season 1. It also has a similar structure, since it involves the use of fragmented memories, an unreliable narrator and multiple parallel timelines. Creator Nic Pizzolatto has been credited with writing all the episodes, but he won’t direct each one. Critically acclaimed indie filmmaker Jeremy Saulnier will be in charge of the first two.
In addition to Mahershala Ali, the third season also stars Carmen Ejogo, Ray Fisher, Scoot McNairy and Mamie Gummer. Release date is still under wraps, but it should premiere some time in 2019.
]]>Set to direct season three of True Detective is Daniel Sackheim (The Americans). Sackheim will replace Jeremy Saulnier who helmed the first two episodes of the next season.
“Director and executive producer Jeremy Saulnier has completed the first two episodes of True Detective Season 3 and will be departing the production due to scheduling issues. Daniel Sackheim has come on board as a director and executive producer for the series alongside series creator and director Nic Pizzolatto,” HBO said in a statement.
The original plan was for Saulnier to split the direction of the next installment’s episodes with True Detective creator Nic Pizzolatto. But now, due to scheduling issues, it’ll be Sackheim, who also serves as executive producer, that will handle the directing with Pizzolatto. This marks Sackheim directorial debut.
While season one was directed entirely by Emmy-winning Cary Fukunaga, the second season was done by multiple directors, so this shuffle is somewhat of a habit for the show’s executives.
The third season revolved around a crime in the Ozarks and stars Mahershala Ali.
True Detective season three is not expected to arrive on HBO until 2019.
]]>HBO has decided to make Fisher a regular in the detective drama’s upcoming season. Fisher isn’t the only new casting addition to the series with Michael Greyeyes (Fear the Walking Dead), Jon Tenney (The Closer) and Rhys Wakefield (The Purge) joining in recurring roles.
The next installment in Nic Pizzolatto’s crime series “tells the story of a macabre crime in the heart of the Ozarks, and a mystery that deepens over decades and plays out in three separate time periods.” Pizzolatto penned season’s 3 entire script expect for the 4th episode, which he co-wrote with David Milch. Pizzolatto is also making his directorial debut, serving as the third season’s director alongside Jeremy Saulnier.
The next installment is expected to premiere in 2019, featuring Mahershala Ali, Carmen Ejogo and Stephen Dorff.
]]>HBO president of programming Casey Bloys, confirmed in July, that the Oscar-winning Moonlight star, Mahershala Ali, will join the cast of True Detective. Now that the 3rd season of the anthology was got the green light, more details about Ali’s character were revealed. Ali will play the lead role of Wayne Hays, a state police detective from Northwest Arkansas.
This time around, the show will return to its rural roots after spending a season in L.A., and will be set in the Ozraks.
EW also confirmed the storyline for the 3rd season: “The next installment of True Detective tells the story of a macabre crime in the heart of the Ozarks, and a mystery that deepens over decades and plays out in three separate time periods.”
Behind-the-scenes details were also revealed: with the exception of episode 4, original show runner Nic Pizzolatto will be the sole writer of the series; episode 4 was co-written by David Milch, who was brought on to help Pizzolatto shape the season.
There is no premiere date yet for the 3rd season of True Detective.
