David Cronenberg is getting ready to go back to his sci-fi roots, and he managed to round up a pretty impressive cast for his next project. Kristen Stewart, Viggo Mortensen, and Léa Seydoux will lead the director’s new film Crimes of the Future.

Written and directed by Cronenberg, this sci-fi drama will take “a deep dive into the not-so-distant future where humankind is learning to adapt to its synthetic surroundings” and explore the rise of “accelerated evolution syndrome”, as reported by Deadline.

Crimes of the Future will be Cronenberg’s fourth collaboration with Viggo Mortensen, following A History of Violence, Eastern Promises, and A Dangerous Method. In addition to starring Stewart and Seydoux, the supporting cast of this project will also include Scott Speedman, Welket Bungué, Don McKellar, and Lihi Kornowski.

Crimes of the Future is Cronenberg’s first directorial effort since 2014 when his last movie Maps to the Stars came out. Mortensen discussed their collaboration with Variety in 2016, saying Cronenberg has been struggling to get financial backing for his projects. However, earlier this year he teased their next team-up in an interview with GQ.

Toronto International Film Festival just wrapped up, and it gave us several promising movies that could snatch the Academy Award in February. Green Book joined the search for the next Oscar front-runner after winning the People’s Choice Award at the prestigious festival.

This feel-good buddy dramedy tells the story of classical pianist Don Shirley (Mahershala Ali) and his driver Tony Lip (Viggo Mortensen), who accompanies him on a tour in the Deep South during the ‘60s.

This promising project will hit theaters on November 21, and its victory in Toronto is a huge deal. Winners of People’s Choice Award have been part of the Oscar race on numerous occasions in the past and even scooped Best Picture several times. 12 Years a Slave, The King’s Speech and Slumdog Millionaire are some of the films to score both awards.

People’s Choice Awards are voted on by TIFF attendees, who vote online or by placing their ticket stubs in a box at the theater. Green Book won them over this year, but it wasn’t the only movie they fell in love with. If Beale Street Could Talk by Barry Jenkins was the first runner-up, and it was followed by Alfonso Cuarón’s Roma.
