After finding success in the MCU, Taika Waititi is getting ready to overtake another Disney-owned franchise. The acclaimed filmmaker is working on his own Star Wars film, with the potential of starring in it, as well.

The Oscar-winning writer of Jojo Rabbit, Waititi is currently looking for his next project since he’s fresh off filming the sports comedy Next Goal Wins. Having him work on the next Star Wars makes sense since he has the experience of carrying a major blockbuster on his shoulders, having previously directed Thor: Ragnarok and its sequel Thor: Love and Thunder.

The news of Waititi’s involvement in the Star Wars franchise comes amidst a major Lucasfilm shakedown. Several projects have been recently put on the back burner, including Patty Jenkins’ Rogue Squadron and the Kevin Feige project that has Michael Waldron attached as writer.

We haven’t gotten a new Star Wars film since The Rise of Skywalker in 2019. Rian Johnson expressed interest in returning to the galaxy far, far away, but he’s currently busy with the Peacock series Poker Face and Benoit Blanc movies starring Daniel Craig.

Despite the lack of Star Wars films in recent years, the franchise is alive and kicking on Disney+, with such shows as The Mandalorian, Obi-Wan Kenobi, and Andor finding critical acclaim.
