“The Man” serves as Swift’s solo directorial debut, and it sees her playing the role of an entitled man who exhibits a truly horrible behavior on every turn, without ever getting punished for it. The 10-time Grammy winner is truly unrecognizable in the role, thanks to impressive prosthetic makeup she had to wear throughout the process.
“The Man” features several obvious references to Swift’s career and the struggles she faced as a woman in the music industry, but she believes that women from all walks of life can relate to these issues.
“It’s really about re-training your own brain to be less critical of women when we are not criticizing men for the same things. So many things that men do, you know, can be phoned-in that cannot be phoned-in for us,” Swift told Billboard while discussing this song.
