After five epic seasons on Netflix, the historical fiction drama The Last Kingdom will soon ride off into the sunset. The fifth season of this beloved series is on the way, and it will be the show’s last.

The Last Kingdom is based on Bernard Cornwell’s book series The Saxon Stories, and it follows the journey of fictional warrior Uhtred (Alexander Dreymon), who was born a Saxon but raised by Vikings, as he tries to claim his ancestral birthright.

One of the executive producers of The Last Kingdom, Nigel Merchant, said they’re proud that the series continues to entertain audiences all over the world and can’t wait to give us another amazing season.

“We had such a tremendous response to the last season, so are thrilled to be bringing it back for a fifth and final season on Netflix. With such a loyal fanbase, we’re excited to give viewers a chance to follow Uhtred on the next stage of his epic quest, where not everyone survives,” said Merchant in a statement.

The Last Kingdom originally premiered on BBC Two in 2015, before moving to Netflix with the start of the third season.
