“The Simpsons” Renewed for Two Additional Season at Fox

The Simpsons aren’t going anywhere! Fox’ iconic animated sitcom has just been picked up for 31st and 32nd season, meaning that the show will remain on television at least through spring of 2021.  The news was announced at the Television Critics Association winter press tour and later confirmed on The Simpsons’ official social media.

The Simpsons is already the longest-running primetime scripted show in television history, having passed Gunsmoke in its 29th season. With the two new seasons, which will amount to record 713 episodes, it is hard to see any other show achieving the same sucsess in the near future.

While The Simpsons saw a big decline in ratings (and arguably quality) since the ’90s and early ’00s, the show remains a big draw for Fox. Besides its legacy value and the iconic status, this animated sitcom still manages to attract 4 to 7 million viewers each episode, which is enough for the network to keep it on air.

Still, the future past 2021 remains unclear for The Simpsons given the fact that its producers 20th Century Fox TV were acquired by Disney in a big acquisition in 2018. The show has also become more expensive to make over the years, and Fox is reportedly barely breaking even on the show. But, let’s worry about that in two years.
