We still haven’t stopped listening to The Weeknd’s last album After Hours, but its follow-up is already on the way. The R&B superstar is currently plotting his next album, and he gave us a sneak peek at the new chapter of his journey with “Take My Breath”.

The epic visual for this single was directed by Cliqua and it draws strong inspiration from the Matrix movies. This doesn’t come as a surprise since The Weeknd recently told GQ that if he could play any role in a past film, it would be Neo because these films “literally changed” his life.

“Take My Breath” may be inspired by The Matrix, but it’s been linked to another current movie—The Suicide Squad. It was supposed to premiere before the IMAX showings of this blockbuster, but it was eventually pulled due to its intense strobing effects.

“Take My Breath” gave us the taste of the singer’s fifth studio album, which he mentioned on several occasions under the working name The Dawn. It’s not his first single of 2021—he gave us several amazing collaborations in the past few months, including the chart-topping remix of “Save Your Tears”, featuring Ariana Grande.
