“Varsity Blues” in Development For Quibi

A new take on Varsity Blues is coming to Quibi.

The 1999 original movie starred Dawson’s Creek alum James Van Der Beek as Jonathan Moxon, a quarterback in a Texas high school football team, who struggles to balance his life with the pressures of the game and his hostile and abusive coach played by Voight.

The modern take for the mobile-based streaming service Quibi will be helmed by Anne Fletcher (27 Dresses) from a script by Tripper Clancy.

“For all those who cheered Mox’s refrain, ‘I don’t want your life,’ as well as all those who never heard of the West Canaan Coyotes, we’re thrilled to bring Varsity Blues to Quibi and into the 21st century!” original film’s producer and current project’s executive producer Mike Tollin said in a statement.

John Gatins and Peter Guber will exec produce alongside Tollin. he project hails from Tollin and Guber’s MSM and Paramount Television.

Quibi is set to launch next spring.
