The first trailer for the Kerry Washington-led American Son is here.
Netflix dropped the first look at its upcoming adaptation of playwright Christopher Demos-Brown’s hit 2018 play Sunday during the Emmys.
The feature is directed by Kenny Leon and stars Washington and Steven Pasquale as an estranged couple who are looking for their missing 18-year-old son. Entertainment Weekly reports that Washington and Pasquale both appeared in the 2018 Broadway production. They were joined by Jeremy Jordan and Eugene Lee, both of whom are also set to reprise their roles from the stage production.
Washington said of her character: “This character is like the un-Olivia Pope. She’s about as different from Olivia Pope as you can possibly get, and I think that’s probably why I was drawn to her. She was such a huge challenge for me as an actress to spend seven or eight years playing somebody and then try to have the pendulum swing in the total opposite direction. She is not — there is no Prada in this one folks, sorry.”
American Son had its premiere at the Toronto International Film Festival.
