Weekend Box Office: “Spider-Man: Homecoming” Scales $117M in Heroic U.S. Bow

Spider-Man: Homecoming has opened this weekend, earning $117 million from 4,348 theaters over the U.S. This proves that Sony’s decision to partner with Marvel Studios was an extremely good one.

The movie’s earnings passed up Wonder Woman, Beauty and the Beast, and Guardians of the Galaxy Vol 2. The new Spiderman movie is the eleventh ever superhero film to open to over $100 million.

“This is a great result, and a gigantic win for Sony and for Marvel. Spider-Man is one of the most beloved characters in the Marvel Universe, and Homecoming is a fresh take,” said Josh Greenstein, Sony president of worldwide marketing and distribution.
