Yahya Abdul-Mateen II in Talks to Star in “Candyman”

The new Candyman movie has found its hook-wielding killer.

Multiple outlets report that Yahya Abdul-Mateen II is in final talks to star as the lead in the forthcoming Candyman movie.

Production of Jordan Peele’s sequel to the 1992 horror film is expected to begin next spring. The feature, however, is only going to be a “spiritual sequel” to the original, returning to the neighborhood where the legend began: the now-gentrified section of Chicago where the Cabrini-Green housing projects once stood.

The sequel was announced last November. Nia DaCosta (Little Woods) is set to direct from a script co-written by Peele and Win Rosenfeld. Peele will also produce alongside Monkeypaw’s Ian Cooper.

Abdul-Mateen starred as Black Manta in Aquaman. His other credits include Netflix’s The Get Down. He is also set to star in Peele’s thriller Us and HBO’s Watchmen.

Candyman is expected to hit theaters in the summer of 2020.
