The Affair was one of the most acclaimed projects in Showtime’s history, but all good things must come to an end. The hit series has just been renewed for its fifth and final season, giving characters some time to find closure.
Since its debut in 2014, The Affair took its fans on an emotional roller-coaster with four main characters played by Dominic West, Ruth Wilson, Joshua Jackson, and Maura Tierney. What started as a story about the emotional and psychological effects of infidelity, turned into so much more. Viewers witnessed everything from multiple divorces and shattered relationships to a vehicular homicide and arson.
What made The Affair so special is the fact it gave us a chance to watch the story unravel through the eyes of various characters. Their subjective approach and selective memory bias always made us question what’s real and who’s telling the truth. According to Gary Levine, president of programming for Showtime, it’s not being canceled – it’s simply coming to its natural end.
“We love the intimacy, the nuance and the emotional honesty of The Affair’s subjective examination of both infidelity and fidelity. Sarah Treem has always envisioned this as a five-season series, and we will be fascinated to see where she takes her talented cast and all of us next year in its climactic season,” said Levine.
