According to IndieWire, Animaniacs is returning to the small screen with some updates. The original Steven Spielberg cartoon found a new fan base when it hit Netflix’s instant streaming services in 2016. Since then, Warner Bros. has reportedly been in discussion with Amblin Television about a possible addition to the series, though it’s unclear which network would host the new cartoon variety show.
Originally created as a spin-off of Spielberg’s Tiny Toon Adventures, the 99-episode series, which starred the three Warer siblings named Yakko, Wakko, and Dot, initially ran from 1993 to 1998. The first two seasons appeared on Fox Kids, while subsequent episodes aired on Kids’ WB. The show won eight Daytime Emmy Awards as well as a Peabody Award during its airing, IndieWire reports.
Animaniacs is not alone when it comes to returning adored kids’ & cartoon series. Netflix is working on a new Magic School Bus starring Kate McKinnon, as well as an animated Carmen Sandiego series starring Gina Rodriguez. Earlier this year, Samurai Jack also came back to Adult Swim and the Powerpuff Girls returned to Cartoon Network in 2016, reports E! News.
