A Wrinkle in Time‘s director Ava DuVernay has already lined up her next project and this time, she’s stepping into the superhero world.
Warner Bros. has signed up the acclaimed filmmaker to direct New Gods as part of the studio’s DC Extended Universe. The superhero saga is based on DC comics series of the same name, first penned by legendary writer Jack Kirby in the 1970s.
The film involves a complex mythology and a pantheon of deities who hail from two twin planets, the idyllic New Genesis ruled by the Highfather, and Apokolips, a dystopia filled with machinery and fire pits ruled by Darkseid. Both of them consider themselves gods, living outside of normal space and time in a realm called the Fourth World.
The complex and large cast of characters could be challenging when it comes to bringing the franchise to the big screen but DuVernay has proven her skills with her take on A Wrinkle in Time. DuVernay became the first black woman in Hollywood to direct a live-action movie with a production budget of $100 million. The fantasy film has grossed to $42.2 million in its first six days in North America, according to Variety.
On Thursday, the 45-year-old director may have confirmed her involvement with the DC film when she thanked Jack Kirby on Twitter alongside a black and white photo of the famous creator.
If Warner Bros. push through with DuVernay, she will be the first woman of color to direct a DC Comics movie, ET reports. She previously directed the Oscar-nominated documentary 13th and the historical drama film, Selma.
