Box Office: “Cars 3” Races Past “Wonder Woman” to No. 1

Four new hit films opened this weekend (“Cars 3,” “All Eyez on Me,” “47 Meters Down,” and “Rough Night”), meaning that there has been an exciting race in the box office. On Sunday morning, the numbers revealed the ‘winner’.

Disney and Pixar’s Cars 3 is in the first place with $53.5 million from over 4,200 locations. The original “Cars” had earned $60.1 million during the first weekend and the Cars 2 cashed in $66.1 million.

Disney distribution chief Dave Hollis said about Cars: “This, at the end of the day, is a very important franchise for the company. We’re seeing, once again, the power of putting a female protagonist front and center … There is now a new generation of ‘Cars’ fans.”

This all means that “Wonder Woman” now holds the 2nd place on the box office chart, earning $40.1 million this weekend.
