The collaboration between Denzel Washington and Antoine Fuqua is the gift that keeps on giving, and their next project together is shaping up to be the most epic one yet. The two-time Oscar winner will play the legendary warrior Hannibal in Antoine Fuqua’s upcoming historical epic.

According to the film’s official logline, it centers on “real-life warrior Hannibal, who is widely regarded as one of the greatest military commanders in history” and “covers the pivotal battles he led against the Roman Republic during the Second Punic War.”

Hannibal is best remembered for storming in Italy with his army, after crossing the Alps atop North African elephants, and his brilliant military tactics secured him a place in history books.

Washington reportedly wanted to play this character for 20 years, but he wasn’t ready to commit to a project of this scope because he was focused on raising his family. He’s finally ready to take on this role, and he found perfect partners in crime in his frequent collaborator Fuqua and the three-time Oscar-nominated screenwriter John Logan.

The Hannibal biopic isn’t the only historical epic that Washington is attached to. He’ll reteam with Ridley Scott in Gladiator 2, also starring Paul Mescal, Joseph Quinn, Fred Hechinger, Pedro Pascal, Connie Nielsen, Djimon Hounsou, and Derek Jacobi.
